Ok, so these two new Breitling dive watches are not as bright and bold as the Rainbow-coloured SuperOcean 42 and 36 watches I covered here. Nor are they as zingy and summer-ready as the turquoise-coloured SuperOcean Automatic 44 watch, either. But these models still carry all the beloved features of the 60’s surfer-inspired SuperOcean watch that we have all come to know and love. They harken back to a time when Breitling refined its classic dive watch, equipping it with a new movement and an innovative chronograph minute hand that did away with the hard-to-read sub-counters and instead featured a centrally travelling minute hand on the main dial for measuring elapsed time underwater.

The new watches also recall the parred-back “Slow Motion” aesthetic, with a contrasting coloured rehaut and a legible dial – essential features for any dive watch, surely? The new Breitling SuperOcean Automatic 46 SuperDiver watches compete in what can only be considered a highly competitive field on the market. This category is oversaturated, to say the least. If you want a dive watch of any style, colour, material and budget, you will find one quite easily. There is, as the phrase so often goes, a little something for everyone. But when it comes to exploring the elite of the dive watch category, the choices become a little easier. Breitling is a trailblazer in aviation watches, we know that much, but its dive watch range is equally as appealing. The SuperOcean and SuperOcean Heritage watches are the places to visit if you’re looking for 1960s nostalgia and retro dive watch aesthetics.

These two new models, as their names suggest, measure a broad 46mm diameter, Make no mistake, these watches create a huge wrist presence. That way, it won’t become displaced on impact or when accidentally bumped. And while we’re on the topic of bumps and knocks, you should know that this new SuperOcean watch is shock-resistant, sand-resistant, and saltwater-resistant. If that wasn’t enough, the 1000-meter water-resistant case of this watch also benefits from technology that protects against the damage caused by magnetic fields. This is thanks to a soft inner iron cage that protects the movement sitting at the heart of the watch.

The new Breitling Superocean Super-Diver watch comes in a choice of two dial colours; black or khaki green. The rehaut on these watches is presented in a contrasting white hue, but is also fully luminous at night, while the military pattern on the main coloured part of the dial further enhances a tool vibe. The squared minute hand, baton hour hand, and lollipop second hand all share the same characteristics seen in the rainbow SuperOcean models, as do the square and rectangular-shaped hour markers – all of which have been treated with plenty of Super-LumiNova.

These SuperOcean watches from Breitling have closed casebacks that conceal the Calibre Breitling 10. This self-winding movement provides a power reserve of 42 hours and is based on an ETA engine. It performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The watches also come on a choice of two strap options. You can choose between a black or green rubber band that matches the brushed-coloured ceramic insert on the bezel, or a sophisticated three-link titanium bracelet with a folding clasp and micro adjustment feature.
