The Breitling Superocean Automatic Gets a Splash of Rainbow
Thursday - 13 June 2024
Dive into the new rainbow colours of the Breitling SuperOcean Automatic watches today – perfect for all your water-based pursuits.
Remember the colourful NHS SuperOcean Heritage ’57 Limited Edition II released during Covid back in 2020? Of course, you do. How could you forget it? The recipients of those funds which Breitling donated to frontline workers were commended for their life-saving efforts during the pandemic and the SuperOcean watch got lots of well-deserved attention. Well, if you liked that watch, you’re going to love these new beach-ready surfer-inspired 1960s-esque SuperOcean watches. They pay homage to an important time in watchmaking during the zeitgeist of the swinging sixties. They reference the revelation of Breitling’s “Slow Motion” technology. An invention by which the chronograph hand took the place of a temporary hour hand during a dive, helping the wearer navigate his descent with accuracy. We’re going to look at the new Breitling SuperOcean Automatic watches today, presented in eye-catching rainbow hues and vivid rubber strap options.
The Revelation of the “Slow Motion” Design
Picture a time when the shortboard was not yet invented and those seeking the surfer way of life were designing their own boards and setting trends that would stick for decades. The surfing scene back in the 1960s was taking off. People were chasing the surf-riding dream and enjoying the freedom that the sport gave when cruising the waves freestyle. Back then, it was something considered quite controversial. Today, it’s both edgy and fashionable and has been tried by millions of people, all seeking the same thrill. Hollywood was capitalising on the surf movement with films like “Surfing Hollow Days” and “Endless Summer”. And watchmakers like Breitling were honing into the needs of the aquatic adventurist.
Now we’ve set the scene, let’s talk a little more about Breitling’s role in the world of surfing during this time. The brand had already developed its first dive watch, but it was pretty clear at the time that there was more room for improvement. The SuperOcean watch, which launched in 1957, came in two versions, appealing to two different demographics. On the one hand, you had an expertly crafted chronograph tool intended for those who wanted to time durations out at sea without compromising on water damage. On the other, you had a simple three-handed timepiece that oozed style, intended for the beach-going type. Going back to that chronograph, Breitling realised the need for something more technically refined and in 1964, released the SuperOcean “Slow Motion”.
It provided the wearer with an innovative chronograph hand that, instead of rotating once every minute, would rotate once every hour. It would enable the diver to accurately monitor how long he had been underwater for and how long he had remaining. Since this hand moved much slower than the typical chronograph minute hand, Breitling devised an innovative way to distinguish if the timer was activated or not. When moving, an indicator would turn yellow at 6 o’clock. When paused, the yellow indicator would bear a black dot in the middle. When completely deactivated, the indicator would be black. The new “Slow Motion” calibre was a revelation for its time and was followed by the automatic SuperOcean that captured the relaxed pace of life along the shoreline. The SuperOcean “Slow Motion” watch was celebrated for its pared-down design with clean lines and squared-off hands. These 1960s watches eliminated any details that didn’t support the crucial criteria of a dive watch.
The New Breitling SuperOcean Automatic 42 and 36mm Rainbow Watches
The new Breitling SuperOcean Automatic 42 and 36 watches come in 5 variations. Out of the 42mm models you can choose between a punchy orange, yellow, blue and turquoise rubber strap embossed with subtly textured external strips. These models all sport a sleek black dial to mirror a black ceramic unidirectional rotating bezel around the edge. As you’d expect of any Breitling dive watch, the bezel is smooth, scratch-resistant and easy to grip. It rotates only in the counter-clockwise direction, enabling you to track dive time without the risk of accidentally knocking its position and extending dive time.
Each of the steel models has a colour-bursting hour track represented in rainbow shades. Similar to the NHS SuperOcean, the hour track batons transition from yellow to green, to blue and then purple, finishing with reds and oranges around the last quarter. The minute hand features the legible square tip, accompanied by a blue lollipop second hand and a baton-shaped hour hand. All of these features have received a generous layer of Super-LumiNova material which promotes legibility at night. During the day, however, you can rely on the anti-glare properties of a sapphire crystal glass front, which protects the display from scratching, fading, heat, moisture and dust. Inside the new Breitling SuperOcean 42 and 36 watches is the Calibre Breitling 17. The self-winding engine beats at a rhythm of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of 38 hours.
The lady’s 36mm Breitling SuperOcean watch promotes time via a clean white dial with crisp rainbow-coloured baton hour markers and hands executed in the same fashion. Obviously, being a smaller version, the watch completes a superb “his and hers” duo and comes fitted on a striking white rubber band with a white ceramic bezel trimmed in 18ct rose gold.
The New Breitling SuperOcean Automatic 44mm Turquoise Watch
Not all the new Breitling SuperOcean Automatic watches present rainbow colours. This turquoise dial iteration features a classic black ceramic bezel but echoes the same dial layout and case construction as its siblings. The watch comes on a choice of a matching turquoise rubber strap but you can also enjoy it on a sportier black rubber band or a dressier stainless steel with a folding clasp.
