The new Frederique Constant Classic Power Reserve Big Date watch
Thursday - 31 August 2023
For the first time, Frederique Constant develops an in-house movement that combines three complications together. The power reserve, moon phase and big date functions are presented in the new Classic Power Reserve Big Date watch, available in a limited platinum or rose gold version, as well as two standard non-limited steel version.
It will be Frederique Constant’s 35th birthday this year. Almost catching up with this number is the brand’s selection of in-house movements, totalling 31 this year. The latest movement released by the manufacturer features three complications and has been released in conjunction with the Geneva Watch Days 2023 event. It debuts inside a special timepiece – the Frederique Constant Manufacture Classic Power Reserve Big Date watch. The instrument is brought to animation by an oversized date function, a moonphase function and a power reserve indicator. As well as a limited edition platinum and rose gold watch, there are two stainless steel models that will join the standard collection. It is the first movement to unite all three complications in one and has been designed in the brand’s Plan-les-Ouates manufacturing facilities in Geneva.
When you consider all the beautiful timepieces to have been released by Frederique Constant, you could be mistaken for thinking that the brand has been around for longer than 35 years. Yet the manufacturer is still relatively young despite its 31 in-house made calibres and shows no signs of slowing down. Technically speaking, it has only taken Frederique Constant 19 years to make these incredible movements, since the first to emerge was the FC-910 back in 2004. By that point, the manufacturer had already made the Heart Beat watch but by the year 2021, Frederique Constant had released the monolithic silicon oscillator, which brought the movement’s power reserve up to an impressive 80 hours.
The new Frederique Constant Classic Power Reserve Big Date watch
The new Classic Power Reserve Big Date watch from Frederique Constant borrows its case design from the brand’s Classic watch collection. The model measures a diameter of 40mm and sits at a thickness on the wrist of 12.9mm. To the right of the case is the crown, which has been grooved to assist with an easy grip. The entire case is executed in a polished finish, elevating the timepiece to dressier heights when required in the evening. Alongside a 35-piece limited edition run of the platinum version of the Classic Power Reserve Big Date watch, there are also 350 pieces of the rose gold version to get your hands on. Let’s take a closer look at all four models, both limited and non-limited.
The stainless steel options for the Frederique Constant Classic Power Reserve Big Date watch include a deep blue dial and a silver dial. The 40mm models are accompanied by the platinum iteration presenting the time in a meteorite blue display with a matching blue alligator leather band and the rose gold version, featuring a sun-brushed grey dial, finished on a brown alligator leather strap. Both of the steel models come fitted on a matching dark blue alligator leather strap.
One of the most appealing features of the new Frederique Constant Classic Power Reserve Big Date watch is its legible dial arrangement, with proportion and features that equally balance one another out for superb round-the-clock access to the time, the positioning of the moon, and remaining power reserve. The oversized double-framed date window sits upon a white date wheel between the 2 and 3 o’clock position, with crisp black numerals that are easy to read at a glance. Then there is the power reserve indicator, showing up to a full 50 hours of energy in its arc-shaped scale across the left-hand side of the dial. A red warning zone is highlighted for the “0” reading. At 6 o’clock is the moon phase indicator, which shows the exact positioning of the moon as it is seen in the night sky each evening. The silvery moon and stars are beautifully set against a rich blue background in each model, including the dark grey rose gold model and the silver dial option in steel.
The rest of the features of this Classic Power Reserve big Date watch are in line with Frederique Constant’s other Classic wristwatches. The hour track is represented in slim indices, whilst the central hour and minute hands taper to a fine point with their diamond faceted and hand polished execution. Without any unnecessary pushers to add complexity to the model, this new Frederique Constant Classic watch promises you a simple way to adjust the functions of the watch through the crown. Flipping the watch over to the reverse side reveals a sapphire-backed case, crafted from the same material as is chosen for the front of the watch. The sapphire crystal is not only scratch-resistant but is also anti-reflective for a clear view into the dial or the movement whenever desired. The Frederique Constant Manufacture Calibre FC-735, operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The movement also produces a power reserve of 50 hours when full and boasts elegant decorative perlage and Cotes de a Geneve finishes through the sapphire exhibition caseback.
