Seiko Releases New 5 Sports SKX Watches for 2023
Tuesday - 18 April 2023
Some vibrant new colours have landed in the 5 Sports SKX watch collection by Seiko, each one offered in a more manageable 26mm case size.
The Seiko 5 Sports SKX is based upon the design of Seiko’s all-time favourite beater watch – the SKX007. The backstory behind that watch began in 1965 with the introduction of the brand’s first mechanical Seiko diver watch from which many watches borrowed design characteristics thereafter. One of these was the SKX007 – an all-around purpose-built diver’s watch that soon became the go-to companion for absolutely everything, water-related or not. Put simply, you can wear the SKX007 on the beach, for travel, or when taking part in vigorous sports activities, especially if you don’t want to risk damage to your more expensive watches. In fact, the Seiko SKX007 is such an affordable watch that even those who collect high-end luxury watches will still have one of these in their collection. Likewise, you can depend on a watch from the SKX series for absolutely everything. The 5 Sports line was revamped back in 2019 and has been made available in a plethora of different colours, perhaps none as invigorating as the four new releases that Seiko has unveiled for 2023, however.
Recently Seiko released a more compact version of its field watches and it seems that this demand for smaller watches continues in 2023, so Seiko has answered that call with a more comfortable and smaller case design for the SKX. The new quartet comprises the reference SRPK29, SRPK31, SRPK33 and SRPK35. The design of the new 5 Sports SKX watches is still faithful to the profile of the SKX007. Its unquestionable robustness proves useful for sports, outdoor pursuits and for facing harsh external environments, whilst its dial is ultra-legible thanks to crisp markings and the generous use of luminous material. Considering its affordable price, the Seiko 5 Sports watch can easily suffice as a daily beater on the wrist and stands the test of time thanks to its strong stainless steel case and its accurate mechanical movement.
Unisex 38mm options for the 5 Sports SKX watch range
A mid-size for the new Seiko 5 Sports SKX model means a unisex option for male and female Seiko watch fans far and wide. The cases of the four new releases are all crafted from stainless steel and will suit most tastes with a more manageable 38mm diameter as opposed to previous 42mm models which, for some, measured too large on the wrist, especially when you consider that the lug-to-lug width measured in at 46mm. Sitting at a 12.1mm height, the new 38mm models are perfect for active individuals who frequently partake in sports where the absence of a bulky watch is integral to comfort and performance.
The dials of the new Seiko 5 Sports SKX watches include a model with a black dial and a black bezel, a cream dial with a dark grey bezel, a mint green dial option, and a vibrant orange dial. The latter two have been equipped with a black bezel, with respective white and yellow numerals marking out the 60-second track with contrast. The dials all feature a triangular marking at 12 o’clock and a mixture of circular and pill-shaped markers around the rest of the hour track. The central hands are equally as visible and feature an arrow-tipped minute hand and a cathedral-shaped hour hand together with a lollipop second hand. These features have all been treated with Super-LumiNova, including the circular pip on the end of the seconds hand.
The metallic insert on the bezel of each new Seiko 5 Sports SKX watch can be aligned with the minute hand in the dial and used to measure elapsed time thanks to a unidirectional rotating bezel that will only move in the counter-clockwise direction. Each dial also features a minute track in black, except for the black dial version, which features white detailing instead. The 3 o’clock location holds the day and date feature, dressed against a white background in all four models to enhance readability. Inside the case of each of these new models is the Calibre 4R36, which performs at a rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour and provides a power reserve of 41 hours once fully wound. This in-house movement is protected by a steel case that has received a mix of brushed and polished finishes. A hardlex crystal glass front, alongside a screw-down crown, helps the case uphold a 100-meter water-resistant capability.
To finish, the new black, cream, mint green and orange versions of the more compact 38mm Seiko 5 Sports SKX watch are fitted on a matching stainless steel bracelet with brushed and polished links along with a three-fold clasp and push-button mechanism.
