Meet the U-Boat Darkmoon Curve Camouflage Watches
Friday - 21 April 2023
The Darkmoon Curve Camouflage watches from U-Boat were released at the Geneva Watches & Wonders 2023 event and come in a Khaki-style Camouflage patterned PVD-coated case finish with a black or grey dial in a 40 or 44mm size option.
The U-Boat Darkmoon watches offer a unique way to read the time. The watches are all oil-filled. This year, the Italian manufacturer has released some more models from the Darkmoon collection, some with vivid splashes of colour across their dial, others with an IP bronze-coated stainless steel case and some with a military-inspired case colour. Meet the new U-boat Darkmoon Curve Camouflage watches.
Why Darkmoon watches are so special
The Darkmoon watches by U-Boat are all powered by a quartz movement, which makes sense given the fact that a mechanical movement would not be able to operate within an oil-filled environment unless sectioned within its own separate chamber. You have to bear in mind, however, that the Darkmoon watches are very reasonably priced. Even the air bubble locked underneath the dial comes at a price to remove completely, yet it appears that U-Boat experts intended this bubble to be a part of the design anyway. In some situations, it enlarges the hands and the hour markers around the periphery of the track. At other times, it hovers above the red lettering on each dial of the Darkmoon series, located at 6 o’clock. The inverted cyclops lens, however, creates a personal and unique-looking feature, enlarging the date, indexes and markers and acting as a functional tool to assist with timekeeping. Aside from this unique oil-filled design, the watch’s 3D shape creates the impression of a non-existent sapphire crystal glass top. Despite having an undeniable retro flair, U-Boat Darkmoon watches appear unique and futuristic at the same time. The novelty of the bubble that manoeuvres across the top of the dial serves as a constant reminder that there is oil in there, reinforcing the identity of the watch.
For 2023, U-Boat has extended this line to create five black dial models with vibrant splashes of colour and coordinated rubber straps in green, white, aquamarine, orange and yellow. There’s also a range of Vintage Curve watches made from a stainless steel case executed with a bronze painted surface and a Curve Camouflage version which we’re going to look at in more detail today. The addition of these new case finishes adds a new and exciting angle to the collection – each one faithful to the familiar style of the popular Darkmoon series and offered in a choice of 40mm and 44mm sizes.
In a recent article, I covered the U-Boat Darkmoon Vintage BR Curve watch and its alternative black-coated case option. These are offered in both sizes, with a black dial for the black-coated model, as well as a black dial with brown elements or a reverse effect - brown dial with black elements - all depending on your preference and all boasting that vintage-inspired look. The new U-Boat Darkmoon Grey and Black variants of the Curve camouflage model, however, come with a camouflage PVD-coated pattern that pairs really nicely with both dial options. Although an unusual case finish, it is in no way overpowering, so if you were looking for a two-handed time and date watch with a difference, the oil-filled Darkmoon Curve Camouflage watches are the perfect balance between simplicity and edgy without being “too much”. The grey dial version is a particularly unusual and eye-catching mix of tones and hues. Fully submersed in oil, it enhances the colour further, whilst the hour track is represented in the recognisable mix of markers – sticks, dots and two Arabic numerals at 2 and 4 o’clock. The red lettering can be seen on both the grey and black dial versions at the south of the dial, depicting the ”Darkmoon” lettering. The back of the case features lettering that denotes the unique locking ring system fitted by experts to promise an easy battery change of the quartz movement when needed.
Whether you opt for the 40mm or 44mm size of the U-Boat Darkmoon Curve Camouflage watch with a black or grey dial, all models offer a water-resistant rating of 50 meters and are fitted on a black rubber strap with the large U-boat lettering embossed upon their surface.
