Hands-on with the Montblanc 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen The 8000 Watch
Thursday - 20 April 2023
The new Montblanc Geosphere 0 Oxygen The 8000 watch pays homage to famous mountaineer Mark Maker Reinhold Messner, who has conquered summits that very few in the world have and climbed all 14 peaks without supplemental oxygen. Similarly, the robust design of this new travel-friendly tool from Montblanc, complete with 24-hour zones, a dual time zone, day & night indications and a date feature, operates under an oxygen-devoid design.
It’s easy enough to look back at some of the world’s bravest mountaineers and see how Montblanc’s robust and durable tool watches have assisted them in some of history’s most challenging feats, but more recently, it is clear to see how mountaineering has influenced Montblanc. This year, for the Watches & Wonders 2023 event, the Swiss manufacturer revealed a special collection that not only honours the history of mountaineering but also those brave enough to climb the highest peaks on earth. Its name? The 8000 Capsule Collection. The 8000 reference in its name points to the height of all 14 mountains that Montblanc pays homage to in this series. The 14 peaks are the world’s highest – all measuring at least 8000 meters above sea level. The quartet, newly released by Montblanc, comprises the 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen The 8000, the 1858 Geosphere Automatic Date 0 Oxygen The 8000, a special boutique model named the Limited Edition 1858 Geosphere Chronograph 0 Oxygen The 8000 Boutique Exclusive, and the model we’re going to take a closer look at in this article, the 1858 Geosphere Chronograph 0 Oxygen The 8000.
8000 meters above sea level provides barely enough Oxygen levels to sustain human life for more than a few hours. Add to the mix unpredictable weather conditions, extremely cold temperatures and avalanches, and these unforgiving conditions are unsafe for even the most daring of mountaineers and explorers. One of them is Mark Maker Reinhold Messner who succeeded in reaching the summit of all 14 peaks over a period of 16 years and did so without carrying supplemental oxygen with him. Explorers such as Messner are celebrated in this new collection, which hosts the new 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen The 8000.
The 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen The 8000
The new 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen The 8000, like all models from the quartet, comes with a certificate to authenticate the brand’s Zero Oxygen technology. The design, conceptualised in 2022, benefits from having an oxygen-free internal environment, which eliminates the risk of fogging the glass – an undesirable effect that can occur when a watch undergoes drastic temperature changes often associated with a change in altitude. This feature also prevents oxidisation, making it a great option for mountain climbers.
It features a 42mm case size and has been crafted from titanium, which promises a lightweight finish on the wrist – perfect for exploration. The design is inspired by Reinhold Messner and promises functions that include a world time complication, a 24-hour scale, a dual time display, date aperture and day & night indications. Here, a Sfumato dial boasts a dark grey pattern with muted blue shades that depict two turning hemisphere globes – one for the northern part at 12 o’clock, one for the southern at 6 o’clock. The design is inspired by mountaineer, Messner and the 14 peaks he accomplished as part of his mission. The 24-hour time zones are present in these two moving hemisphere discs, readable on the luminous continents and accompanied by day & night indicators, as well as a visible vibrant orange hand for each disc. A dual time display is located at 9 o’clock, balanced by a black-filled date window at 3 o’clock.
The new Montblanc Geosphere 0 Oxygen The 8000 is equipped with a bidirectional rotating bezel that features the cardinal points in luminous material. Turning the case of the watch over reveals a colourful 3D laser-engraved image of the K2 mountain, which conceals the Calibre MB 29.25, based on the Sellita SW300-1. It provides a power reserve of 42 hours. Its flat hairspring also provides restoring force to the balance wheel, enabling it to oscillate at a rhythm of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
Devoid of oxygen and promising several advantages to the explorer, the new Montblanc Geosphere 0 Oxygen The 800 watch is certainly worth a look if you like to explore the great outdoors, thanks to its ability to eliminate fogging and prevent oxidisation. The watch comes fitted on an equally lightweight titanium bracelet with a taper, along with a fine adjustment system.
