Basel Review New Watches from Seiko
Wednesday - 21 March 2012
The Seiko Astron is the world's first GPS solar watch. The brand has developed its own patented, low-energy-consumption GPS receiver so the watch can receive GPS signals from a global network of satellites. The Astron recognises all 39 time zones on earth, and the signals allow it to quickly identify time zone, time and date data and adjust accordingly.
The solar powered Astron receives a time signal automatically once a day, and connects to the GPS satellites to pinpoint its exact position on earth. The hands will then adjust to the local time with Atomic Clock precision. The timepiece also has a perpetual calendar for accurate date display.
When getting off a plane in a new time zone, the wearer can manually adjust the time by pressing a button and the Astron will self-correct within seconds to the reflect the local time zone. Reflecting Daylight Savings Time or Summer Time is also achieved through a one-touch operation.
The limited edition Seiko Astron has a high-intensity titanium case and ceramic bezel. The timepiece is lightweight and robust, with recessed sides of the case to save weight. There will be 2,500 available for around £3,500.
There are three other models available: two in stainless steel and one in high-intensity titanium. Each of the non-limited Astron watches has the same functions and high specifications as the limited edition, including a dual time sub-dial, in-flight mode indicator and sapphire crystal with Super-Clear Coating. Movement is Caliber 7X52, and the price is expected to be below £2,000.
