Unveiling the Breitling Super Chronomat 44 Four-Year Calendar
Thursday - 06 May 2021
With a semi-perpetual mechanism, the new Breitling Super Chronomat 44 Four-Year Calendar watch is a companion to keep you organised whilst embodying the DNA of the iconic Frecce Tricolori-inspired Chronomat.
It is the robustness of the Breitling Chronomat, together with its distinct design that has gained the watch a cult-like status amongst elite watch collecting circles. For better words, the Chronomat - with its immediately recognisable rider tabs bolted onto its bezel and exclusive Rouleaux bracelet – is Breitling’s blockbuster hit. Adding to its desirability is the fact that modern Chronomat watches, like this Super Chronomat 44 model, are equipped with reliable self-winding movement, plus the manufacturer has coupled its functional design with various complications. A chronograph, of course, but also GMT variations and now a four-year calendar.
The very first Breitling Chronomat watches of the 1940s were fitted with the famous slide rule bezel but by the time the collection was relaunched during the quartz crisis it had gained a sportier aesthetic that gradually evolved into today’s all-purpose model for land, sky and water. Its onion-shaped crown and easy-grip bezel have made the watch the practical, reliable and robust tool watch that we’ve all come to know and love today, and the collection just keeps getting better. The Super Chronomat watch is described as a sturdy and stylish companion but one that is equally able to impart sophistication on the wrist thanks to its refined Rouleaux bracelet that secures with a butterfly or folding clasp. More specifically, the Breitling Super Chronomat 44 Four-Year Calendar watch is endowed with some very luxurious 18ct rose gold finishes for a decidedly more indulgent feel on the wrist.
The calendar function integrated into the design of the Breitling Super Chronomat 44 Four-Year Calendar watch takes into account the different lengths of the month that occur in a four-year period. With a mechanical memory of 1461 days, this is an intricate mechanism that works on a wheel that rotates once every four years to drive the calendar indications in relation to each month’s length. Considered a must-have complication in every luxury watch brand’s collection, models like the Breitling Super Chronomat 44 Four-Year Calendar watch are examples of horological mastery. Its dial features four counters positioned at 12, 3, and 9 o’clock and its semi-perpetual calendar only needs adjusting once every leap year. It comes in two variations - a black dial and a blue dial – both of which come on a choice between a Rouleaux stainless steel bracelet or a Rouleaux-inspired rubber strap in a colour corresponding to its respective dial.
The new Breitling Super Chronomat 44 Four-Year Calendar watch
The new Super Chronomat 44 Four-Year Calendar watch features a ceramic insert within its stainless steel unidirectional rotating bezel – a first for the Chronomat series. Unlike the rest of the new releases from the new Super Chronomat range, however, the Four-Year Calendar iterations feature tone on tone counters, while the new UTC model and the blue, black and brown B01 44 releases feature silver-filled chronograph sub-dials for higher contrast. In the design of the Four-Year Calendar watch, the tone on tone counters help create a more dress watch style. The black and blue ceramic inserts on the bezel correspond to their respective dial colours as do the rubber strap options and the bezel also features the distinct rider tabs that make handling the watch under wet gloves a complete breeze. On a chronograph platform, the watch provides 12-hour, 30-minute and 1/4th of a second counters at 6, 9 and 12 o’clock. Combined with these counters are the days of the week, months of the year and date features respectively. In addition to this, a moon phase indicator resides at 3 o’clock, framing the iconic Breitling lettering and famous “B” logo in 18ct rose gold trimmings. The difference between the blue and black models is that the blue variation features a stainless steel case with 18ct rose gold fittings and a bi-colour bracelet, while the black version features an all-stainless steel case. Both models feature a colour-coordinated crown.
The furnishings on the dial of the new Breitling Super Chronomat 44 Four-Year Calendar watch are perfectly harmonised by the watch’s technical ability, making this wristwatch a collectable for any kind of enthusiast, from fans of complication watches to chronograph lovers to avid Breitling fans as well as those who have followed the legacy of the Chronomat watch from the beginning. The dial is surrounded by an understated yet legible tachymeter scale for carrying out tasks like measuring speed based on distance or distance based on time travelled. The central seconds hand is tipped in red and the hour markers are presented in baton indexes bordered, just like the chronograph counters and the hands, in 18ct rose gold. The hour and minute hands have also been filled with Super-LumiNova to assist with timekeeping in the dark.
Underneath the dial and its protective shield crafted from cambered sapphire crystal glass (with anti-reflective treatment applied to both sides) is a mechanical movement tested by Breitling. The Calibre 19 is a trustworthy self-winding engine that put on show behind a sapphire exhibition caseback. It performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a power reserve of 42 hours once fully wound. The movement is also COSC-certified and comes equipped with a vertical clutch.
