UK Exclusive: Breitling Superocean 44 Special Edition

Swiss watch giants Breitling have indulged its British fan base with a UK exclusive Breitling Superocean 44 Special Edition watch. The familiar design retains all the bold and sporty characteristics we have come to love from the brand’s high-end divers’ range along with some new features including a black dial and blue bezel combination paired with an outstanding 1,000 metre water resistant rating.

The Case

Like other Breitling Superocean watches before it, the new special edition UK exclusive is designed for men (and women with a love for larger timepieces) who like to take on any challenge. As always, the stainless steel architecture is engineered to be highly durable, making it ready for hiking, gardening, swimming, surfing or diving – basically everything we want to do this summer. It measures to 44 millimetres in diameter and to a height of 14.2 millimetres and offers a combination of brushed and polished surfaces.

On top of the case, the Breitling Superocean 44 Special Edition watch presents a unidirectional ratcheted steel bezel in blue with raised numerals counting up to 60, perfect for measuring elapsed dive times. The triangle marker at 12 o’clock features a dot of Superluminova for readability of the countdown even during low light diving adventures. The most impressive part of the Breitling Superocean 44 watch is of course its water resistant rating which exceeds 1,000 metres. This is assisted by convex sapphire crystal glass, a screw in crown with prominent crown guards and a screwed down stainless steel case back.

The Dial

Housed beneath the scratch resistant glass and contrasting subtly to the navy blue bezel, the UK exclusive Breitling Superocean 44 presents a smooth black dial. The centrepiece is incredibly clean and refined, offering remarkable legibility to secure the watch’s place as one of the best luxury diving watches on the market. Around the circumference are trapezoid-shaped hour markers interrupted by numerals for the 12, 6 and 9 o’clock positions. The 3 o’clock numeral is replaced for a white date window. At the centre, the Breitling Superocean watch opts for matte grey hands for the hours and minutes and a bold arrow-shaped seconds hand tipped in red. All three hands, the hour markers and the numerals are coated in glow in the dark Superluminova

The Movement

Powering the Breitling Superocean 44 UK Exclusive Special Edition watch is the well-known Breitling 17 self-winding movement. Like all of Breitling’s movements, the Calibre 17 is COSC certified to be accurate to -4 to +6 per day. We’re also treated to a power reserve of 38 hours, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a total of 25 jewels. Sadly, we’re unable to see the mastery of the mechanical movement from within the watch but instead, the closed case back welcomes a unique engraving to mark its a United Kingdom special edition status.

The Strap

The new Breitling Superocean 44 watch can be ordered on a choice of two straps, both under different references. Our personal favourite is reference A173678A1B1S1 which opts for a water resistant black rubber strap perfect for diving. The strap is embossed with the Breitling logo and closes by a brushed stainless steel folding clasp with push buttons. The second strap option can be found under reference A173678A1B1A1 and features a traditional three-row link bracelet engineered from brushed stainless steel and is similarly secured by a folding clasp with push button release.

Price & Availability

For the rubber strap variant, the Breitling Superocean 44 retails at £3,180 while the stainless steel reference comes in a little more at £3,350. As a UK exclusive timepiece, the new release can only be ordered from a United Kingdom-based retailer like Jura Watches.
