TUDOR Unveils the new Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” Watch in Time for This Year’s Giro d’Italia 2024 Bike Race
Tuesday - 07 May 2024
A set of new wheels is almost as good as a new watch, especially when we’re talking about the two-wheel type. In celebration of TUDOR’s very own cycling team, the brand has released the new Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” in time for this year’s Giro d’Italia 2024 Bike Race.
There is no back-pedalling here. TUDOR, on its forward-thinking path, pedals ahead with yet another tough and incredibly functional sports watch – the Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition”. Ideal for those sitting firmly in the saddle to take on this year’s Giro d’Italia bike ride, the chronograph features a cycling-specific tachymeter scale, a black and red racing team-inspired colour scheme, and a light carbon case for optimum comfort on the wrist.
Geared for Speed and Endurance
Primed for the Giro d’Italia bike race, the new TUDOR Pelagos FXD Cycling watch promotes values of endurance, performance and stamina. The race itself, which first began back in 1909, has run continually albeit with the exception of both World Wars and runs for approximately 23-24 days, with three rest days included. Standing for “The Tour of Italy”, the multiple-stage bicycle race has grown over the years. Initially holding the event open specifically to Italian participants only, the race has since grown and expanded, and now welcomes participants from all over the world (mainly UCI WorldTeams). Throughout the Giro bike race, the route will take participants through the Alps and runs throughout the month of May. The new TUDOR watch released in celebration of the brand’s own racing team, which is currently taking part in the event, belongs to the company’s popular Pelagos watch collection, more specifically, the FXD sub-category.
The TUDOR Pelagos FXD Collection
The Pelagos watch from TUDOR has always been the brand’s lightweight titanium dive watch. Functional, precise and lightweight, its linear design arrived on the market in 2012, the same year as the iconic Black Bay watch. It offered an impressive water-resistant rating of 500 meters. “Pelagos” is a word that means “sea” or “ocean” in Greek, linking the timepiece to the waters along with several innovative dive-ready features, including a unidirectional rotating bezel and helium escape valve. One of the highlights of the collection was TUDOR’s patented fold-over clasp, equipped with a special adjustable diving extension feature. Following a special Pelagos LHD (left hand drive) watch came the FXD model. Launched in 2021, the TUDOR Pelagos FXD watch honoured the partnership between the watchmaker and the French Navy. It stood out from other models within the range thanks to its case and lugs, crafted from one piece of metal. The lugs, which are “fixed” are used as a reference in the name of this model, eradicating the risk of the strap ever loosening and falling off the wrist. The Pelagos FXD, although only water resistant to 200 meters, has an attractive profile and an appealing spec list that combines aesthetics with functionality in perfect balance.
The new TUDOR Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” watch follows in the faithful footsteps of the brand’s recent Alinghi Red Bull Racing watch but instead is primed for the Giro d’Italia race. There are a handful of subtle touches that nod to the brand’s partnership with the sporting event including its black dial with vibrant red accents that instils a sense of sportiness and adrenaline. Firstly, the watch measures 43mm in diameter and has been crafted from a carbon composite to keep in line with the carbon fibre material used in the development of some of the fastest bikes in the world. Other elements of the watch are crafted from titanium, resulting in a lightweight and ergonomically developed sports watch for optimum robustness. The watch is ideal for withstanding the fast-paced rigours of professional cycling, but at the same time, can suffice as a tough, daily tool for adventures on the road.
The new TUDOR Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” watch has a race-ready dial that is reminiscent of TUDOR’s racing team colours. The hour markers, which are square-shaped, have been treated with generous amounts of Super-LumiNova, as have the iconic “Snowflake” hands which arrived during the 1960s. The idea of the hands, once combined with the luminous material, was to afford a larger legible surface - a design feature that works perfectly in this new design. These hands are crafted from luminous ceramic, making them even more visible under high-pressure environments. One of the key features in the dial of this new TUDOR Pelagos FXD watch is the redesigned tachymeter scale around the flange. The details are printed on a 45-degree angled rehaut with an inner ring that displays the speeds ridden by cyclists.
Underneath the dial of the new TUDOR Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” watch is the in-house developed Manufacture Calibre MT5813 It performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a power reserve of 70 hours once fully wound. The movement provides central hours and minutes, a running seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock, chronograph seconds, and 45-minute totaliser at 3 o’clock, and a date function at 6 o’clock. A tungsten openwork monobloc rotor is also incorporated into the movement, which promises an accuracy of -2 to +4 seconds a day. The COSC-certified movement boasts a column wheel mechanism and vertical clutch, as well as exclusive finishes, all protected inside a 200-meter water-resistant case.
To finish, the new racing-ready TUDOR Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” watch wraps around the wrist with a signature fabric strap from TUDOR. The band woven in France on Jacquard looms from the 19th Century by the Julien Faure company is a stylish element that brings the entire design together. The black jacquard-woven technical fabric is particularly robust and secures to the wrist with a TUDOR-engraved folding clasp.
