A watch to “Circuit the World” with, no matter how many days it takes!
Ever seen any of Montblanc’s famous writing instruments, designed in celebration of Phileas Fogg and his voyage across the world? Well, the prestigious Swiss company manufactures exquisite timepieces inspired by the famous novel too! Here’s the latest – the Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum Around The World In 80 Days Limited Edition watch, complete with a steel and titanium case, a striking blue 24 time zone world complication dial, and an impeccable in-house designed movement for good measure.
Montblanc’s Orbis Terrarum Journey
As well as the fascinating nods made to the famous novel, the story of the Orbis Terrarum watch also plays an important role in the brand’s heritage. Montblanc first released the Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum in 2014 as an elegant take on its world time complication. The name of the watch derives from the term “Diviso Orbis Terrarum”, which means “around the world” in Latin. It refers to a mythical map created by the Romans. Although not one world map seems to have ever survived history, it has certainly inspired Montblanc in the design of the world time watch and its 24 different world time zones.
The first model with a blue dial was crafted from stainless steel, followed by a brown dial variation enrobed in luxurious 18ct rose gold. The third arrival came shrouded in green tones and was limited to just 71 pieces worldwide and was a special United Arab Emirates edition. This model was closely followed by the rose gold and grey dial version crafted from stainless steel. Continuing the identity of the Orbis Terrarum, the model boasted the familiar pebble-shaped case measuring 43mm diameter and a display caseback crafted from sapphire crystal glass. The exhibition feature gives way to a stunning performance of mechanical mastery, where all parts work in equilibrium with one another as the engine powers the hands around a deeply captivating dial.
In comparison, the new Montblanc Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum Around The World in 80 Days watch is equally as alluring. Its onion-shaped crown is adorned with the iconic black and white Montblanc logo – a true hallmark of quality craftsmanship and authenticity. Then, there are features like the series of rotating discs for the cities and the 24-hour scale not to mention a set of gracefully moving central hands. The display comprises two layers - one made from sapphire crystal and the other, which outlines the world details as they are seen from the north pole. The two tones of the 24-hour scale have also been seen in previous versions of the watch and identify the day and night hours. Suffice it to say, this new Montblanc Star Legacy Around the World In 80 Days watch is perfectly primed for the frequent traveller, as well as those who like the complexity of a sophisticated mechanical complication watch. Any lucky collector can fully appreciate the level of work and skill carried out to create this masterful timepiece.
The New Montblanc Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum Around the World in 80 Days Limited Edition
The new Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum watch pays homage to the “Around the World in 80 Days” novel with several nods to the story written by Jules Verne. The tale associated with adventure, exploration and intrigue, brings to life the voyage undertaken by Phileas Fogg and Passepartout. The complication integrated into the watch indicates 24 different timezones at a glance and displays current time via an eye-catching turquoise and aquamarine blue dial colour. The map of the world, which rotates with the movement, is portrayed across the surface of the dial and is detailed with 80 gold dashes to map out Phileas Fogg’s journey.
Framing this detailed dial is a stainless steel case measuring 43mm in diameter. The caseback is crafted from titanium and has been engraved with a detailed 3D laser depiction of the faithful elephant Kiouni. The majestic image of the animal conceals the movement behind its surface – the Calibre MB 29-20. This automatic engine, complete with world time complication, beats at a frequency of 28, 800 vibrations per hour and delivers a power reserve of 42 hours once fully wound.
Sitting at a height of 13.5mm in thickness, the Montblanc Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum Around The World In 80 Days Limited Edition is a comfortable option to combine with elegant and sophisticated attire. Nevertheless, the option of the leather band is a good choice. The matching blue hue of the calf leather effect on the band secures to the wrist with a stainless steel triple folding clasp, ensuring a snug fit and boasting a beautifully engraved Montblanc logo on its surface. The lining of the strap offers another added layer of detail. It features embossed Chinese coins and Boteh leaves upon its surface – both of which play a part in the story of the novel.
Other features of the new Montblanc Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum Around The World In 80 Days watch include a sapphire crystal glass front that promises both scratch-resistant and anti-reflective properties. The case is also water-resistant to 50 meters and the watch is limited to just 360 pieces worldwide.
