The Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Nino Farina II Limited Edition – A Champion’s Watch
Wednesday - 31 January 2024
The new Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Nino Farina II extends on the watchmaker’s relationship with motorsport by capturing the profound self-belief and raw courage of the famous driver.
The light blue and vintage brown colourway of the original Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Nino Farina was a very beautiful thing indeed. It captured its audience by distilling the essence of the race track and by paying tribute to one of the most influential Formula 1 racing drivers in history. Emilio Giuseppe Farina, also known as Nino, was celebrated in a 50-piece limited edition wristwatch, adorned with a deep brown bi-compax chronograph complication that couldn’t be missed on the wrist. Now, Cuervo y Sobrinos extends on this special motorsport story with the release of the latest addition, the Historiador Nino Farina II Limited Edition.
The Achievements of a Legendary Driver
Nino Farina’s crowning achievement was winning the first Formula 1 World Championships in 1950. His Alfa Romeo 150 steered him to success on the track, reaching a dream that Farina had followed throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The date of September 3rd 1950 at the 21st Italian GP will forever remain engrained in racing history. Nino Farina was the first pole man and the first to set the fasted lap in the race, not to mention the first Italian driver to lay claim to this special title. Despite several fractures and sport-related injuries brought on throughout his racing days, Nino Farina continued to compete in his favourite Italian cars. Some of his other greatest achievements include winning the last Tripoli Grand Prix in 1940, coming 2nd in the 1937 Mille Miglia and 2nd once more in 1940. In 1949 he landed at Ferrari where he won the Argentinian GP. Farina returned to Alfa in 1950, and then finished up at Ferrari once more, where he won’t the 1953 German GP.
Nino Farina’s untimely death was a shock to all. Driving to see his godson in Aiguebelle in a Ford Cortina Lotus, it skidded into a tree, where the dashboard speedometer stopped at 180km. Ever since then, Nino Farina’s life has been celebrated. The previous iteration by Cuervo y Sobrinos was dressed in a light blue dashboard-inspired dial to reference the Italian champion, paired with a racing-inspired brown leather strap, a domed sapphire crystal glass front, and a 42mm stainless steel case. The piston-style chronograph push-pieces were perfect for the design, creating a true vintage-inspired aesthetic.
Following on from this highly acclaimed limited edition model is a new creation, exclusive to just 158 pieces worldwide to reference the “Alfetta” 158. Inspired by the historic race, the watch features the colours of the Alfa Romeo. For this new model, Cuervo y Sobrinos wanted to add a twist to its colour and downsize its case to a more manageable 40mm diameter. The Historiador Nino Farina II is crafted from stainless steel once again and sits under a double-curved sapphire crystal glass front. The glass, tough and durable, has been treated with anti-glare technology.
Again, Cuervo y Sobrinos has chosen a matte brown perforated racing-inspired leather strap adorned with light blue stitched detailing down the edges. The perforations echo the detail on racing gloves while the back of the steel case has been executed with an “El Primero Campeon del Mundo” – translating to” First F1 Champion”, along with Nino Farina’s signature.
Back to the dial, several references pay homage to the Alfa Romeo 158, particularly the hands situated at the centre of the chronograph counters at 3 and 9 o’clock. These are finished in red to echo the colour of the car's exterior. The central chronograph and matching elements of the tachymeter are finished in green in reference to a four-leaf clover – the symbol of the Alfa Romeo company.
Beating away inside the new Cuervo y Sobrinos watch from the Historiador collection is the automatic Calibre CYS 8129. The self-winding engine is modified from the ETA 2894. It comes with an engraved oscillating weight and promises a performance of 28,800 vibrations per hour. It also provides a power reserve of 42 hours once fully wound.
