TAG Heuer Releases The Carrera Date 39mm Watches
Monday - 01 November 2021
The TAG Heuer Carrera watch collection is growing once more with a resolutely elegant and refined 39mm Date iteration available in a black, blue or silver-coloured dial.
Whilst we have been enjoying some new and interesting delights as part of the Geneva Watch Days 2021 event, TAG Heuer has been busy refining many elements of the flagship Carrera watch. The line, which links the famous Swiss watchmaker with the world of motorsport, has extended its line to feature a 41mm Day-Date model, a Twin-Time variation with a second time zone, a 39mm Date model and a 29mm Date iteration. Today we’re going to look at the four different 39mm Date models which come in a choice of blue, black and silver dials. Each one is equipped with central hands and indexes that have been treated with Super-LumiNova and are powered by the Calibre 5.
How has the Carrera watch evolved?
In the design of the new Carrera Three Hands variants, Guy Bove, who joined the TAG Heuer family back in 2018 where he became creative director, has confirmed that there are endless changes to appreciate. Some are more subtle than others, but as an overview, one refinement, in particular, is the switch from triangular-shaped indexes to rectangular-shaped indexes which, when viewed from the side, appear to take the shape of an Olympic podium, structured on three different levels. These indexes engage with light very cleverly, as do the central hour and minute hands. Whilst the Carrera Twin-Time Date 41mm model I covered here features a sunray texture across its blue dial surface, these 39mm Date models boast a more intricate sunray snailed finish, just like the new 41mm Daye Date Carrera watches. These understandably give the display a further sense of depth and dimension. It becomes apparent here, that the surface of the sunray snailed models are particularly unusual, since very few, if any brands have managed to execute the entire surface of a dial with these concentric circles. Many seem to feature on sub-dials more commonly. The latest generation of Carrera Chronograph watches from 2020, together with the more recent 2021 Aquaracer models have begun to feature the date window at 6 o’clock. This north-south axis creates a sense of symmetry and balance across the surface of the dial and makes for a particularly striking finish in the Carrera Date 39mm models. The border that frames the date aperture (as well as the day-date functions on the other new releases) is also much sharper, crisper and finer.
The H-Shaped bracelet
The new TAG Heuer Carrera Three Hands releases are endowed with the H-shaped stainless steel bracelet to not only keep in line with the material of the case but also to give the watch collector a more comfortable and wearable experience on the wrist. The links of the bracelet are not only shaped into the H letter (representative of the Heuer name) but they are also finished in contrasting fine-brushed and polished finishes and ergonomically developed to sculpt closer to the contours of the wrist. The lugs are shorter whilst the profile of the bracelet is thinner and lighter. The H-shaped bracelet of the new TAG Heuer Carrera watches encloses the wrist with a folding clasp and a double push-button mechanism. The surface of the clasp is also engraved with the iconic TAG Heuer logo to match the 12 o’clock location on the dial, as well as the engraved surface of the crown located at 3 o’clock.
A closer look at the TAG Heuer Carrera Three Hands Date 39mm watches
There are four new iterations to enjoy in the 39mm size of the Carrera Date model. Two of these feature black dials. One offers rhodium-coated indexes and hands treated with Super-LumiNova ref: WBN2110.BA0639, and the other features 5N rose gold-coated indexes and hands and goes by the reference: WBN2113.BA0639. There’s also a stunning blue sunray version with rhodium-coated hands and indexes treated with the same luminous material with a reference of WBN2112.BA0639, as well as a silver dial version ref: WBN2111.BA0639 with luminous-treated rhodium-coated appliques. All of these four dials are executed with a sunray snailed finish and feature a date window at 6 o’clock, balanced by the brand logo at 12 o’clock. The dial, with a minute track around the periphery of the display, also features the “Automatic” lettering, referring to the Calibre 5 lying inside its 100-meter water-resistant case.
The new 39mm TAG Heuer Carrera Date watches are all crafted from stainless steel and boast a mix of fine-brushed and polished elements. In addition to this, the models all feature a bevelled and domed lens of sapphire crystal glass with a double layer of anti-reflective treatment applied to its surface. Flowing into the bracelet are tapering lugs that keep the Carrera watch looking undisputedly sporty and elegant at all times.
The Calibre 5, which sits inside the robust casing of each of these 39mm Carrera Date watches, can perform at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a 38-hour power reserve. The arrangement of the movement is also put on display through an exhibition caseback feature on the reverse of the case. Included in this unhindered view of the movement is Cotes de Geneve finishes and an oscillating mass that has been engraved with the “TAG Heuer Calibre 5” lettering.
