Seiko Reveals Presage Sharp Edged Akebono GMT SPB361J1 Watch
Friday - 03 March 2023
You get a lot for your money when it comes to Seiko watches. The Seiko Presage Sharp Edged models can be purchased for under £2000 and they offer so much in the way of functionality and longevity. The new Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Akebono GMT watch is a practical travel tool that has been inspired by a special time of the day – twilight time at dawn. Amongst some of its most admirable features is a deep blue sapphire-coloured gradient dial adorned with a hemp leaf pattern and a striking arrow-tipped GMT hand for tracking two time zones at once.
A little about the Seiko Presage series
Seiko Presage watches are particularly great for the price-conscious collector. Despite its huge success over recent years, the collection was only made available to the public in 2016. Before then, they were available exclusively to the Japanese market only. What makes this series so special is that its timepieces are mainly inspired by historic collectables from the past. Many of the dials are crafted from enamel, Urushi lacquer or Arita porcelain. The watches are also powered exclusively by mechanical movements. The Basic Line, however, comprises models with sunburst dials, whilst the Sharp Edged models are some of the latest additions, boasting a distinctly modern elegance on the wrist. Throughout the entire Seiko Presage watch collection, you’re guaranteed to find a timepiece to suit your needs. Aside from simple three-handed time and date models, there are chronographs, power reserve indicators and GMT complications like the new Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Akebono GMT watch.
Seiko watches from the Sharp Edged line of Presage models have angular cases with mixes of brushed and polished effects that refract the light and help to frame the geometric dials inspired by the leaves of the Japanese Asanoha hemp plant. Sharp Edged watches are available in dial colours of Aitetsu blue, Shironeri white, Tokiwa green, Susutake brown, Sumiiro black, Ebiiro crimson, Binroujikuro black, and Suzuiro grey. These colours now make way for a graduated deep blue sapphire-coloured dial that presents the time via a set of luxurious rose gold-toned hands and indexes against a hemp leaf-patterned background. Let’s take a look at the new Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Akebono GMT watch in more detail…
The new Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Akebono GMT SPB361J1 watch
The new Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Akebono GMT watch reference SPB361J1 in deep blue sapphire and black captures the point at which “ the dark of night gives way to the glimmers of dawn.” The case of the watch is crafted from stainless steel with a durable black hard coating, giving the GMT watch a sleek and modern character on the wrist. It measures a 42.2mm diameter and sits at a height of 13.65mm. The angular case is integrated with 100-meter water resistance and is topped with a sapphire crystal glass front to protect the stunning deep blue sapphire-coloured dial and its intricately textured surface from denting and scratching.
The new Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Akebono GMT watch interprets the deep blue hues of the sky at dawn when the sun first rises against a blanket of darkness. The rose gold-coloured hands and indexes represent the breaking through of the sunlight and have been carved into angular shard-like structures to match the sword-shaped central hour and minute hands that taper to a sharp point. These hands have also been treated with Lumibrite to assist with accurate timekeeping in the dark and during the night. The GMT hand pops against the watch’s dramatic black dial and works in combination with a 24-hour scale around the periphery of the dial. In addition to the GMT function on this dial, Seiko experts have equipped the Sharp Edged Akebono GMT watch with a small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock, highlighted by bright white markings and a power reserve indicator that shows the remaining autonomy of the internally-fitted movement.
The Calibre 6R64 is an in-house manufactured Seiko watch crafted in Japan that offers a power reserve of 45 hours and performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Fitted to this Seiko GMT watch, it features central hours, central minutes, a sweeping second hand and a GMT function. It comprises 29 jewels and has featured throughout the Sharp Edged GMT line-up.
Perfect for travelling on business or vacation and ideal for those looking for an affordably priced watch with a unique edge, the blue sapphire and black colourway of the new Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Akabono GMT watch is fitted on a matching black hard-coated stainless steel bracelet which secures to the wrist with a three-fold clasp and a push button release mechanism.
