Seiko Introduces the Prospex Speedtimer ‘Crystal Trophy’ Limited Edition
Monday - 26 September 2022
Seiko has released a new limited edition watch as part of the Prospex series in honour of its successful Speedtimer watch heritage. Meet the new Seiko Prospex Speedtimer ‘Crystal Trophy’ Limited Edition watch for 2022, exclusive to 10,000 pieces worldwide and inspired by the crystal trophies awarded to high-profile competing athletes.
A brief overview of recent Seiko Speedtimer Chronograph watches
Seiko has some great landmark achievements to be proud of. One of them is the first automatic chronograph watch to become available to the general public back in 1969. Last year, we saw Seiko launch a new batch of sporty timepieces in honour of its earlier vintage models from the 1960s. They were made available in automatic and solar power and made a bold suggestion that Seiko was taking its chronograph game more serious since for many years the Speedtimer watch has become almost non-existent. Whilst Seiko was still producing quartz-powered chronographs, many fans had long been awaiting an automatic chronograph faithfully reinterpreted by the popular Speedtimer watch from decades ago. Both the white and grey dial options featured a bi-compax chronograph layout with the small second sub-dial at 3 o’clock, balanced by the 30-minute count-up scale at 9 o’clock. These automatic versions were powered by the revamped Calibre 8R48, which had been tweaked to replace the three sub-dials with these two features. Belonging to the 8R series, the movement featured a column wheel and vertical clutch, promising all-around high quality and robustness.
The three solar-powered models launched in conjunction with these automatic Speedtimer watches were equally as attractive, with a panda dial, a blue dial with black sub-counters, and a classic-looking black model. This year we’ve seen Seiko release a vibrant blue Speedtimer watch belonging to the current Prospex collection. Designed in the same way as the two automatic versions from 2021, the watch features a vibrant blue dial with silver-filled sub-counters at 3 and 9 o’clock and sporty injections of red. The new Seiko Prospex Speedtimer ‘Crystal Trophy’ Limited Edition watch
Now it’s time to introduce a new Seiko Prospex Speedtimer watch. A limited edition model of just 10,000 pieces worldwide. To introduce the new model, Seiko explains: “We have put in the message that we want all challengers who have overcome their limits or achieved difficult goals and have completed their mission regardless of race, gender, or handicap to take a trophy of life. This is a story that can be created only by SEIKO who has a long history of sports timekeeping and PROSPEX which has always been supporting the challengers. This model is inspired by a crystal trophy widely used for rewarding sports achievements as well as cultural and business achievements since crystal is a material that represents the glow of the inner beauty. Crystal trophy symbolizes the message the SPEEDTIMER collection wants to convey: “tribute to all the challengers.”
The new Speedtimer Chronograph is dedicated to the trophies awarded to athletes in high-profile competitions. The watch is solar-powered and is fitted on a stainless steel bracelet with black hard-coated central links, giving the timepiece an overall sporty persona. As with all Seiko Prospex watches. The chronograph is sturdy, reliable and solid. Crafted from stainless steel and integrated with 100-meter water resistance, the finishes on the surface of the case alternate between brushed and polished effects, adding dimension to the design. The blue sunray dial is accompanied by a set of three striking black-filled sub-counters. The scale at 3 o’clock offers a 24-hour feature, whilst the 6 o’clock dial combines a 60-minute chronograph function with a power reserve indicator. The 9 o’clock location is where you’ll find the small seconds.
Powering the Lumibrite sword-shaped hands and white central chronograph seconds hand around the dial is a solar-powered V192 movement that offers an impressive accuracy of +15 seconds a month. The blue crystal trophy-inspired dial also features a date window nestled in between the 4 and 5 o’clock location, as well as quarterly luminous-coated baton hour markers that glow richly when you need them most. Surrounding the entire dial is a black fixed bezel featuring a tachymeter scale with white numerals emblazoned onto its surface. This detailing matches the white markings on each of the black-filled chronograph counters. The push-pieces at 2 and 4 o’clock are, of course, easy to manipulate and the screw-in crown itself bears the engraved Seiko logo upon its surface. The stainless steel and black hard-coated three-link bracelet secures to the wrist with a three-fold clasp, promising a firm yet comfortable fit on the wrist for all kinds of outdoor pursuits.
