Rado Captain Cook Ceramic Rose Gold Watch Review
Monday - 05 July 2021
Earlier this year, Swiss watch manufacturer Rado unveiled a new collection of Captain Cook High Tech Ceramic watches. The designs took inspiration from the iconic 1960’s Captain Cooks of the past and spun them with a contemporary twist, incorporating for the first time scratch resistant ceramic and a complex skeletonised dial. We covered the entire collection in a review here, but today we wanted to take a look at one particular Rado Captain Cook Ceramic model in more detail, reference R32127162 dressed in high-tech black ceramic and elegant rose gold…
THE CASE
For many, Rado are synonymous for their innovative use of ceramic. In 1988, they launched their first Rado Ceramica watch engineered entirely from high-tech ceramic, a material which would go on to distinguish the brand and redefine their DNA as the “Master of Materials”. For the first time, Rado have utilised the scratch resistant, hypoallergenic and lightweight properties of high-tech ceramic into their iconic Rado Captain Cook model in the new Rado Captain Cook Ceramic Rose Gold watch. Measuring to 43 millimetres in diameter and 14.6mm in height, the central monobloc case construction is smooth, lightweight and dressed in a gorgeous matte-black finish. High-tech ceramic is also incorporated into the bezel insert and bracelet.
Like other Rado Captain Cook watches before it, the rose gold reference R32127162 features a distinctive knurled bezel this time dressed in rose gold PVD plating. The stunning pinkish shade of the gold contrasts perfectly against the rest of the monochromatic design and can also be found on elements of the dial and on the screw in crown. The crown alongside the screw down case back assists in a water resistance of 300 metres and through an inlay of black tinted sapphire crystal, the back also offers a view of the automatic winding movement.
THE DIAL
Another first for the Rado Captain Cook Ceramic Rose Gold watch is it dial. For the first time in Captain Cook history, the watch is presented with a fully exposed dial and skeletonised movement, freeing the design of any superfluous material and offering an insight into one of the brand’s automatic winding calibres within. Unlike the Rado Captain Cook watches before it with their retro styled dials, the new ceramic series offers a much more contemporary aesthetic with black tinted sapphire crystal glass and subtle engravings on the skeletonised components. With that being said, the dial of the Rado Captain Cook Ceramic R32127162 continues its heritage with familiar applied indexes and large arrow shaped Superluminove hands in rose gold and the famous moving anchor symbol at 12 o’clock which not only brings a welcome splash of red to the design but neatly spins around just like that of the oscillating rotor seen through the case back.
THE MOVEMENT
The movement housed within the Rado Captain Cook Ceramic Rose Gold watch is no surprise and remains the ever-reliable R734 Calibre based on the brand’s version of the Swatch Group’s Powermatic movement series, engineered off the ETA 2824-2. Its construction includes a Nivachron hairspring, 25 jewels and beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour while allowing a healthy power reserve of 80 hours and classic central hands hours, minutes and seconds.
