The new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante in steel and 950 platinum is an evolution of the GMT Rattrapante watch released last year by the brand and features two independent minute hands for measuring elapsed time that can be stacked on top of one another when not in use.

In this article, we’re going to look at the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante watch, released for this year’s Watches & Wonders 2023 event in Geneva. Here is an introduction to the new Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante watch from Parmigiani Fleurier.
The Minute Rattrapante watch follows on from the Rattrapante GMT watch of 2022, developed by Parmigiani Fleurier last year. It’s yet another example of the brand’s quest in achieving functional continuity and is one of many new releases this year – some of which incorporate Parmigiani Fleurier’s signature material, platinum. The Minute Rattrapante follows the design of the GMT Rattrapante - a reinvention of the split-second complication in the form of a dual time zone watch. But instead of featuring two seconds hands for measuring two different time intervals, it features a pair of hour hands that can either work independently of one another or be stacked on top of one neither for situations where a second time zone function isn’t needed. Its clever design was a breath of fresh air for GMT watch collectors. This time, the new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante watch can be used to measure elapsed time in a totally unique way. When the two-minute hands (one rhodium coated, one in 18ct rose gold) need to be stacked together, the rhodium-coated hand sits on top of the rose gold one. When the pusher on the left side of the case is pushed, the rose gold hand advances forward in one-minute increments (10 o’clock pusher) or five-minute increments (8 o’clock pusher). When pressed together the two pushers will start a timing with the rose gold hand advancing accordingly. Then, when the rhodium-coated hand catches the rose gold hand up, the measure is complete. By pushing a third pusher (the one on the tip of the crown at 3 o’clock), the hands return to their original position.
How does the new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante wear on the wrist?
The new Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante watch from Parmigiani Fleurier measures a 40mm diameter – the same as the GMT watch of last year. It has been crafted from stainless steel and sits at a depth of 10.6mm. Its bezel, knurled and crafted from 950 platinum, seals to a glass front crafted from scratch-resistant and anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass, protecting the surface of the dial from all manner of damage. The back of the 40mm case is screwed but also features a see-through section that enables the movement to be admired whilst it performs inside a 60-meter water-resistant case. The two pushers on the left-hand side of the case are smooth and ergonomically curved to match the roundness of the case, whilst the winding crown on the right side of the case is knurled for an easy grip and has been engraved with the PF logo upon the additional 18ct rose gold pusher.
A semi-integrated stainless steel bracelet wraps around the circumference of the wrist comfortably and is executed with a mix of brushed and polished links, as well as a refined stainless steel folding clasp to complete its classic look. Back to the dial, and a sandy grey colour enables time to be read easily and quickly from upon its surface. The surface of the dial showcases a “Grain d’Orge” patterned texture to compliment a set of 18ct gold hour markers. The Parmigiani Fleurier logo at 12 o’clock is also crafted from 18ct gold with a rhodium-plated finish to create a bright lustre. The absence of a sweeping second hand and any other detailing on the dial provides a clear and simple display.
The Caliber PF052 beating at the heart of this new Parmigiani Fleurier watch for 2023 is manufactured in-house and provides a power reserve of 48 hours whilst performing at a rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour. It comprises a total of 272 hand-assembled components and is an evolution of the movement used in the GMT Rattrapante watch. Polished bevels, Geneva stripes and perlage can all be admired on the decorated movement.
