New for 2023: Cuervo y Sobrinos Vuelo Calendar & Date Watches
Thursday - 29 June 2023
The new time and date and bi-compax calendar watches from Cuervo y Sobrinos’ Vuelo range are not only beautiful collectable pieces, but they also pay homage to a record-breaking Mexican aviator and his iconic Excelsior plane that crashed shortly after taking off from New York back in the 1920s.
It’s difficult not to become emotionally invested in Cuervo y Sobrinos’ compelling collection of luxury timepieces. The brand has Latino roots and often pays homage to its Cuban heritage through its exciting ranges. One collection of Cuervo y Sobrinos watches, however, is the Vuelo, which has no connection to the brand’s past itself but instead takes inspiration from early 20th-century pilot watches. The collection is named after Emilio Carranza, a famous Mexican pilot and the models come in a time-and-date version, a bi-compax calendar version and a bi-compax chronograph iteration. Today, we’ll be looking at the bi-compax calendar and the time-and-date watch.
The new Vuelo watches from Cuervo y Sobrinos pay tribute to a captain who would tragically never touch back down in his homeland again after having embarked on a goodwill flight from Mexico City to Washington DC in 1928. The 22-year-old, Emilio Carranza, had already completed many record-breaking flights in his short career and was a hometown hero, making this recent trio of wristwatches from Cuervo y Sobrinos an even more tragic homage.
The Cuervo y Sobrinos Vuelo time-and-date watch
The time and date version of the new Cuervo y Sobrinos Vuelo watch release is very similar in design to the first model that was launched within the Vuelo collection. It went by the name of the Domingo Rosillo limited edition watch and honoured another aviation pioneer. The new Vuelo watch, however, uses the Historiador case and measures 44mm in diameter with a stainless steel bodywork that evokes a true vintage charm on the wrist. The characteristic screwed-down lugs are present, as is the double curved anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass front, which protects the dial from dust, debris, scratching, light, heat and moisture damage. The new Cuervo y Sobrinos Vuelo time and date watch sits at a thickness of 11.6mm on the wrist and presents the time on a rich black dial with large crisp Arabic numerals around the hour track.
Instead of the number 12 at the 12 o’clock location on the hour track of this new Vuelo watch by Cuervo y Sobrinos, the brand’s emblem stands proud at the top of the dial in a grey colour, balanced by the date window at the southern hemisphere of the display. Designed to provide excellent legibility during the night, the hour markers and hands have also been treated with a generous helping of Super-LumiNova. Just above said date window there is a discreet grey-coloured image of a historical plane hovering in action as a nod to the inspiration behind this model. A portrait of Emilio Carranza can be admired in the intricately engraved caseback of this Vuelo watch. It is also fitted with a brown vintage leather strap that completes a traditional styling and is powered by the Soprod M100-based calibre CYS5103, which provides a power reserve of 43 hours once fully wound and performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
The Cuervo Y Sobrinos Vuelo bi-compax calendar watch
Whilst we will cover the bi-compax chronograph version with GMT function another time, one watch we did want to introduce you to is this bi-compax calendar version, which makes for a perfectly classic and retro-inspired timepiece for wearing on the wrist every day. It is once again crafted from stainless steel and measures a size of 45mm. It also offers the same water resistance of 30 meters.
Its rich black dial is home to two tone-on-tone counters – one at 3 o’clock denoting the date ring and one at 9 o’clock offering the small seconds function. The lack of a date window at 6 o’clock on this model provides an altogether different way to use the watch, with an alternative date ring at 3 as a useful feature for keeping on track of the passing days of each month. The hour track is characterised by the familiar Arabic numeral hour markers and is accompanied by the cathedral handset at the centre of the dial, treated with Super-LumiNova. distinguishing the series is an engraved caseback, once again depicting an image of Emilio Carranza and an aircraft model.
This model is powered by the Calibre CYS5160, based on the Sellita SW295, which performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a power reserve of 38 hours. The watch is completed on another brown vintage leather strap with ecru stitching running down the sides and an engraved Cuervo y Sobrinos emblem on the stainless steel pin buckle.
