Meet the Seiko 5 Sports SKX x Yuto Horigome Limited Edition
Thursday - 17 November 2022
Camo watches may not be for everyone but Seiko is here to change that. The release of the new limited edition 5 Sports x Yuto Horigome SKX watch signifies a collaboration with the famous Japanese Olympic gold medallist skateboarder and is exclusive to just 6000 pieces worldwide.
Camouflage is a trend that continually moves in and out of fashion. What’s more, they tap into the elite military wristwatch-collecting world, appealing to a specific genre of luxury watch fans. Just a few years ago, Maurice Lacroix launched its Aikon Camo watch and it proved a successful piece of kit for any explorer. This new Seiko 5 Sports x Yumo Horigome SKX watch blends a modern styling with masculine undertones to bring about a watch that signifies the Japanese brand’s ever-flourishing relationship with the world of sport. Just 6000 pieces of the new limited edition Seiko 5 Sports watch will be made available, adding to its desirability further.
About the Seiko 5 Sports watch collection
The 5 Sports watch series by Seiko promises incredible value for money. The collection is home to a wide range of automatic manufacture movements. These homemade calibres sit inside robust cases topped with strong scratch-resistant Hardlex glass. In particular, the Japanese brand’s pilot’s watches and dive watches are popular designs, yet all models from this family promise affordability, reliability and robustness. Watches from the 5 Sports series began emerging in the 1960s. Ever since then, they have been impressing with their functionality and incredible value. The models remain in their low hundreds and each tool-like watch is equipped with an in-house movement, offering typical features like day-date models, GMTs and singular date models. Seiko watches from the 5 Sports collection offer 100-meter water resistance, as well as rotatable bezels with a minute scale, making them ideal companions for snorkelling and swimming.
The new Seiko 5 Sports x Yuto Horigome SKX Limited Edition watch
The new 5Sports x Yuto Horigome SKX Limited Edition watch has been designed in conjunction with Japanese Olympic gold medallist Skasteboarder, Yuto Horigome. The Tokyo-born sportsman has created a big name for himself in the world of skateboarding and has lived in the United States since 2017. Horigome was the first skateboarder to receive an Olympic gold medal in skateboarding back in 2020 but prior to this has competed in many professional skateboarding contests.
The new Seiko 5 Sports limited edition watch marks the second collaboration with the famous skateboarder (the first being the 2021 release of the all-black SBSA161 model). The brand allowed Horigome to choose materials, colours, graphics and finishes in what is set to be a highly desirable piece to add to any growing Seiko watch collection. The new model has been released alongside a standard version named the Seiko 5 Sports SKX ‘Camouflage’ Street Style watch, which features a green camo dial display in tones of light green, dark green and black. Aside from the obvious difference in dial design, the limited edition watch also features a different caseback.
The black and grey tones of this new black camo watch are finished in a textured pattern across the display, contrasting against the hour markers and handset that have been completed with a layer of Lumibrite for assisting timekeeping in dark conditions. The hour markers, just like the standard version, are represented in pill, triangular and circular shapes. The central minute hand is finished with a legible arrow tip, whilst the hour hand is a chunky cathedral shape. The second hand reaches right out to the minute track around the flange and the display also features a day and date feature positioned at 3 o’clock. These features are set against a white background to enhance readability. The Seiko lettering resumes its usual place at 12 o’clock and the entire surface of the display is protected by a pane of Hardlex glass. The dial is also framed by a black bezel with a white dive-like minutes scale. The rest of the case is crafted from stainless steel with a black hard coating and is integrated with 100-meter water resistance. The case also features a screw-down crown at 3 o’clock, engraved with the Seiko logo and the back of the case is an exhibition style, exposing the elements of the in-house movement behind Yuto Horigome’s unique signature.
Inside the case of the new Seiko 5 Sports x Yuto Horigome SKX Limited Edition watch is the Calibre 4R36. The independently manufactured movement is capable of producing a 41-hour power reserve and performs at a rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour. The movement also comprises 24 jewels and is a reliable and frequently used movement throughout Seiko’s current catalogue.
The new Seiko 5 Sports x Yuto Horigome SKX Limited Edition is available on a black NATO strap and secures with a stainless steel buckle with a sleek black hard coating to match the finish of the case.
