Meet the Bremont Dambuster Limited Edition Watch
Monday - 14 March 2022
The new Bremont Dambuster Limited Edition watch of just 232 pieces worldwide pays homage to the famous Lancaster Bomber with a specially engraved caseback and a set of complimentary silver cufflinks incorporating original aluminium from the airframe of the Lancaster B.VII NX611 “Just Jane” aircraft
Specially assembled in March 1943 to bomb three dams in Germany's industrial heartland, the Dam Busters were members of the RAF’s 617 Squadron. Operation Chastise was conducted two months later on May 16th and 17th, involving 133 aircrew, who flew 19 specially adapted Lancaster Bombers. It is now 80 years since the Lancaster Bomber saw its first service back in 1942. To commemorate the aircraft and pay tribute to its significant role during World War II, Bremont has released this new limited edition Dambuster watch that echoes the aircraft’s courageous mission.
A watch that harks back to uncertain times during conflict and war during the 1940s could not be more fitting right now. The new Bremont Dambuster Limited Edition watch of just 232 pieces worldwide has been created in partnership with the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Nick English explains a little about the drive behind manufacturing such a unique timepiece:
“Undoubtedly wartime has prompted some of the greatest moments of ingenuity and innovation in history and the story of the Dambusters Raid exemplifies this beautifully. Equally the agility, skill and precision demonstrated by the 617 Squadron in the successful deployment of the bouncing bombs continues to amaze me. As we approach the 80th anniversary of the raid we wanted to pay tribute to both Barnes Wallis and the brave men who fought for crown and country, 53 of whom lost their lives. We are proud to be donating one of these Limited Edition timepieces for auction to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund, an incredible charity that has been supporting members of the RAF Family for more than 100 years”
In addition to raising awareness and money for the RAF Benevolent Fund, the limited edition watch offers something exquisite and unique for the wearer too – a set of special cufflinks incorporating original material from one of the aircraft’s airframes.
A slice of history
Part of the desire in owning this Bremont Dambuster Limited Edition watch is to also own a slice of history. The limited-edition Bremont watch that marks one of the most dangerous bombing raids of the Second World War, pays homage to a significant landmark in Britain’s history. The mission destroyed the Eder dam, which secured vital water supplies to Germany during this time of conflict and also damaged the Sorpe dam. The development of the ‘bouncing bomb’ and capability of the four-engine Avro Lancaster served to boost Britain’s morale and has since been retold in the 1955 film ‘The Dambusters’.
The dial and case
The design of the new Bremont Limited Edition watch takes inspirational cues from many military watches that defined the 1940s era. The monopusher chronograph measures a 42mm diameter and has been crafted from a two-piece hardened stainless steel case construction. Against this military-infused backdrop is a Dirty Dozen’-inspired black military dial with instantly detectable “aviator” style hands. The case also sits at a depth of 14.9mm. It features a single push-piece at 2 o’clock for operating the chronograph functions. as well as a screw-down crown at 3 o’clock. Flip the new limited edition Bremont Dambuster watch over and you can admire scenes of the flying Dambuster model Avro Lancaster aircraft engraved upon its steel surface.
The black metal “Dirty Dozen” military-inspired dial of this watch features a mix of white and vintage blue emission Super-LumiNova applications to its elements. The nickel-plated central hour and minute hands are filled with the vintage lume, whilst a red-coated central chronograph hand adds a pop of colour to the display. The sub-dial hands on the watch are finished in a matte black coating and feature a strip of luminous material running down their centres. Balancing the 30-minute and small second sub-counter on this Arabic numeral dial is a date window nestled in between the two counters at 6 o’clock.
The movement:
Powering the hands of this limited edition Bremont Dambuster watch is the 27-jewelled BE-51AE Calibre. The movement performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers an impressive power reserve of 48 hours. It also features an anachron balance spring, nivaflex mainspring and glucydor balance wheel.
The strap;
Just 232 black sailcloth straps have been designed for this limited run of Bremont Dambuster watches. Alternatively, the watch is available on a black rubber strap or a sophisticated brushed and polished stainless steel bracelet.
Making this watch even more special to own, is a pair of silver Avro Lancaster Cufflinks which come with each purchase. The cufflinks incorporate aluminium from the original airframe of Lancaster B.VII NX611 nicknamed, ‘Just Jane’. This recovered aluminium has been stripped to remove its original coating, melted down and recast with pure silver, retaining the precious properties of sterling silver. Each cufflink has been painstakingly crafted and individually cast and then steadily hand-finished by a skilled Bremont expert.
