Monday - 20 March 2023
Two new 44mm Alpiner 4 watches have joined Alpina’s most popular watch collection. The robust steel sports watches are fitted on a leather band and stainless steel bracelet and offer an unusual striped dial pattern in forest green or stone grey.
Four is the number of importance to Swiss watchmaker, Alpina – especially in the design of the Alpiner 4 Automatic watch. Its design is now part of the core collection offered by Alpina in its current catalogue. Based on an original design concept, it addresses the four fundamentals outlined by the brand back in 1938. These four principles paved the way for Alpina’s first sports watch – the Alpiner 4. The original Alpiner 4 addresses four fundamentals that the brand believes constitute a perfectly rugged sports watch or outdoor watch. These are outlined as; anti-shock, anti-magnetic, water-resistant and a robust stainless steel case. In addition to this, the number 4 was incorporated into the design once more with 4 indications displayed on the dial. Now, the Alpiner 4 collection comprises four 44mm redesigned models that took four years in the making. Considered one of the oldest sports watches in the history of watchmaking, Alpina arrived at the luxe sports watch party early with its 1938 stainless steel model designed by Gottlieb Hauser and geared for all outdoor pursuits. Today we look at how this design is as current and as popular as ever, with two recently released models in stone grey and forest green.
The four key qualities of an Alpina sports watch have gone on to set standards within the watchmaking industry. Designed to be weather-resistant and rust-resistant, the Alpiner 4 is an everyday companion for all of life’s pursuits. When Gottlieb Hauser designed the first Alpina sports watch, little did he know that in years to come, rival companies would be using this watch as a point of reference and a standard to uphold across the board. Alpina is now adding two new additions to the existing Alpiner 4 line. Continuing with the emphasis on the number 4, there are four essential timekeeping elements displayed on the dial; the hours, the minutes, the seconds and the date. What makes these two new designs exclusive is their patterned dial surfaces in colours of stone grey and forest green. These muted colours are earthy and perfectly suited to the outdoor aspirations of the watch.
The two newly added Alpiner 4 watches have a horizontally-lined dial pattern that runs across the display from left to right. This detailed dial forms a backdrop to a set of hour markers and hands and has been executed in a sunray-brushed finish, diffusing the light across the entire surface of the display effortlessly. The mix of recessed and raised levels on the dial grants superb readability and provides the only detail to what is otherwise a very simple and parred-back design. The main hour and minute hands of the two new Alpiner 4 Automatic watches are treated with a generous dose of Super-LumiNova and glide effortlessly over the dial, pointing towards an hour track represented by tapering baton indexes. Compared to previous models with a flat dial surface, these newly designed dials certainly add something to the wrist.
The AL-525 automatic calibre powers the hands around the dial of these newly added Alpiner 4 watches. The movement sits inside the Alpiner’s strong stainless steel case, water resistant to 100 meters, and performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. It also comprises a total of 26 jewels and produces a power reserve of 38 hours once fully wound. In addition to this, the automatic movement is also resistant to magnetic fields reaching up to 4,800 A/m, acting as a shield around the movement and protecting it from everyday harm. The 44mm steel case of this Alpiner 4 Automatic watch is also shock-resistant, constituting a great action-ready watch for all outdoor challenges.
If you love your steel sports watches, you’ll appreciate the alternating polished and brushed finishes of the there-link stainless steel bracelet modelled on the forest green Alpiner 4 watch ref AL-525GR5AQ6. Alternatively, the stone grey version ref AL-525G5AQ6 is reminiscent of the rocky alps where designer Gottlieb Hauser became inspired to create the foundations of the watch. The watch is completed on a brown calf leather strap with off-white contrast stitching running down the sides and an Alpina-engraved stainless steel fastening.
