Luminox Constellation Automatic 9602 Watches Review
Thursday - 26 January 2023
The Luminox Constellation 9602 watches are the newest additions to enter the Swiss brand's line of expertly developed pilot watches. The Constellation 9602 is, as its name suggests, inspired by the design of the Constellation airliner first developed in 1943 and has been released in three different dial colours and four different variations.
You just can’t beat an affordable watch that balances common sense, functionality and style in perfect proportions. That’s why Luminox has been feeding off the success of its Constellation watch for so long. The design of the Luminox Constellation watch never tires. Big, bold and legible, the newest additions to the line still offer outstanding nighttime illumination courtesy of tritium gas tubes (Luminox Light Technology) and are set to be another go-to for the Armed Forces and other military personnel. Watches that interpret a historical model from Luminox’s catalogue are a novelty for fans, which brings us to the latest Luminox Constellation 9602 watches released just last year. The four models are a tribute to the past but still offer all the modern amenities needed for a robust and reliable day-to-day companion for the wrist.
The Luminox Constellation 9602 watches are a strong nod to the Constellation airliner developed by Lockheed Martin. The propeller-driven civil airliner could fly at high altitudes to avoid turbulence and featured a four-engine pressurised cabin. The Constellation airliner was first introduced in 1943 and remained in production for 15 years, revolutionising air travel for civilians. Amongst some of the best features of the Luminox Constellation 9602 watch is its 100-meter water-resistant stainless steel case executed in a mix of polished chamfers and brushed finishes. The model measures a 42 mm diameter and features a bi-directional rotating bezel and a very interesting dial!
The Luminox Constellation 9602 watch has a 12-hour bezel that is perfect for tracking two time zones, yet the Arabic numerals upon the surface of the bezel only show at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, allowing for the easy tracking of elapsed time as opposed to a 1-12 marked bezel. There are three different colourways available in the new Luminox Constellation 9602 watch, a black dial version with red accents available on a black leather strap or a stainless steel bracelet, a grey dial with blue accents and a matching grey leather strap, and an off-white dial colour with red and green accents available on a rich brown leather strap. All three calf leather bands have been adorned with cream-coloured contrast stitching to enhance a vintage-inspired vibe.
A visible minute track is marked out on each dial with 5-55 markings in large double-digit numerals. A classic mid-century aviation dial design forms the backdrop to a set of legible central hands, making for a great conversation starter. In both the grey and off-white dial options, the first 20 minutes are marked out in a contrasting colour – blue for the grey dial and green for the off-white dial. The latter model also features a vibrant red colour outlining the rest of the track together with black hands and a date window at 3 o’clock. All four models are framed by a black bezel and all feature tritium tubes attached to the central hands for incredibly easy timekeeping at night. These tritium tubes that growly richly in a green colour around the hour track require no light to charge and won’t fade during the night. In fact, if you are quite familiar with tritium tubes and require a watch for nighttime use, the new Luminox Constellation 9602 watch is certainly something you want to get involved in. Orange tritium tubes are also used for the 12 o’clock location around the track and the central hands.
Inside each of these new Luminox Constellation 9602 watches, the SW200-1 movement operates flawlessly inside. It provides a total power reserve of 38 hours once fully wound and is protected inside a robust 100-meter water-resistant stainless steel case. Although you won’t get the chance to observe this movement working effortlessly inside the case via a sapphire-backed case, it does feature an engraved caseback depicting an image of the famous Constellation airliner.
