With its mesmerising flame-effect dial in a rich British Green-colour, the new Cuervo Y Sobrinos Historiador “Flameante” watch is exclusive to C W Sellors Jura Watches in a limited run of just 30 pieces
The story of Cuervo Y Sobrinos began back in 1882 when it was founded by Don Ramon Cuervo – a Cuban with a vision to open a jewellery store on Havana’s San Rafael Avenue. Four years before the opening of its doors, Cuba’s ten-year war finished. Four years after the store’s opening – slavery was abolished. It was an interesting time in Cuba’s history – a time of political upheaval and conflict. The destruction of its coffee industry led to a poor economy, but despite this, Cuervo Y Sobrinos survived the downturn and the Spanish-American war, arriving at the other end during an economic boom.
From there onwards, the company enjoyed a successful 60-year run. Cuba was soon a playground for Spanish-speaking South Americans when in 1928 Pan America opened its fight paths from Key West to Havana – creating a hub for socialites. The rich and the famous frequented the destination. Hemingway, Churchill and Gable all spent a fortune with Cuervo Y Sobrinos. The brand became so successful it began featuring co-branded watches with the likes of Longines and Rolex before starting its very own brand of watch. Soon after, it began producing watches of its own La Chaux de Fonds Switzerland, uniting a Cuban flair with the finest Swiss craftsmanship.
When Fidel Castro seized power over the land, Cuervo Y Sobrinos closed its doors for an entire 40 years. In 2018 the brand was officially revived when a small team of Swiss investors put Massimo Rossi in charge, breathing new life into the company. The company cut down on its expenses and focused on smaller marketing strategies, leading to the launch of some collections that have since shaped the success of the company. One of these collections is the Historiador line. The watches from this line revisit some key landmarks in the brand's history with designs that hark back to a bygone era. With plenty of room to grow, Cuervo Y Sobrinos now adopts a flexible and innovative approach to modern-day watchmaking, including its collaborative work with leading luxury and jewellery retailers like us here at C W Sellors Jura Watches. The new Historiador “Flameante” watch is an ultra-slim version of a much earlier model dating all the way back to the 1950s. It boasts an entrancing British Racing Green dial colour in a stunning “flame” effect that nods to Havana’s golden age. In addition to its quintessential British green colour, the new Historiador Flameante watch also features a first-ever hand-engraved movement in gold with blued screws that can be admired through an exhibition caseback.
Conjuring the atmosphere and nightlife of Havana during an era when jet setters would flock to the Tropicana nightclub until the sun came up, the Cuervo Y Sobrinos Historiador ‘Flameante’ watch embodies authentic Cuban heritage with a classic set of Roman numerals at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. Sitting at a height of just 6.2mm, the new Cuervo Y Sobrinos and C W Sellors Jura Watches exclusive is crafted from stainless steel and measures a diameter of 40mm. Inspired by the tail fins of classic cars and with its set of jutting lugs, the well-proportioned dimensions of the case sit effortlessly underneath the cuff of any work short of a professional suit. The model is also defined by its slim bezel and crown that sits close to the caseband for an ergonomic finish on the wrist.
The fluid and flowing design of the new Historiador watch is enhanced all the more by the dancing flames that lick the surface of the dial in a rich green colour and a detailed guilloche effect. The spear-shaped indexes around the dial create a stark contrast against the textures and tones of the British racing green hues of the display, whilst the small second sub-dial at 6 o’clock has a snailed interior to add a touch of detail and depth to the model. A double-curved sapphire crystal glass front is vintage-inspired and adds to the overall retro charm of the timepiece. Lance-shaped hands consolidate the 1950s design of this new Historiador ‘Flameante’ watch.
Inside the slim case of the new Cuervo Y Sobrinos and C W Sellors Jura Watches exclusive is an equally slim Swiss hand-wound movement that measures a mere depth of just 2mm. Glistening swirls and captivating plumes emanate in golden tones and blued screws that catch the light behind a glass pane of sapphire crystal. The “Swiss Manufacture Latin Heritage” lettering is also engraved into the surface of the caseback whilst a matching green alligator leather strap completes the traditional look of the new Historiador ‘Flameante’ watch.
