Introducing the Seiko Presage “Ao-Fuji” Sharp Edged GMT Limited Edition
Friday - 08 April 2022
The new Seiko Presage “Ao-Fuji” Sharp Edged GMT watch is limited to just 900 pieces worldwide and features a captivating deep blue-coloured dial inspired by Mt Fuji in high summer. Its dial, equipped with a power reserve indicator and pointer-style date feature, is adorned with the alluring ‘Asanoha’ hemp leaf motif – a Japanese symbol of health and vitality.
Similar to its higher-end Grand Seiko models, Seiko Presage watches often incorporate influences from Japanese culture. Just last year we saw Seiko release the Presage Sharp Edged Series GMT, equipped with a pointer-type date function, a power reserve indicator and a GMT function. Its captivating ‘Asanoha’, or hemp leaf, motif adorned across the surface of its dial engaged beautifully with light, creating a geometric surface that contrasted in shadows and angles of brilliance. This year, Seiko releases its new Presage “Ao-Fuji” Sharp Edged GMT watch, limited to just 900 pieces worldwide and showcasing the same entrancing dial effect.
The Seiko Sharp Edges series is expanding once more. The series was born only two years ago, but since its conception has moved fast in cementing its place firmly amongst some of the brand’s most popular and functional tool watches. The new Seiko Presage “Ao-Fuji” Sharp Edged GMT watch is this time presented in a deep blue coloured dial, detailed by the Hemp leaf pattern derived from the Asanoha plant. The Asanoha plant has been a symbol of health and vitality for centuries and its pattern has been imitated onto Japanese fabrics since the Heian period, spanning thousands of years. The fast-growing plant develops into a tall, straight tree in just a matter of months and can be grown all year through. Its hexagonal-like hemp leaves are still associated with growth and good health today.
The new Seiko Presage “Ao-Fuji” Sharp Edged GMT limited edition watch ref. SPB303
The latest 42.2mm GMT watch to mark the Sharp Edged series is crafted from stainless steel and features a mix of brushed and polished elements to its 100-meter water-resistant case. Its surface is enhanced by a super-hard coating and its glass front is crafted from scratch-resistant and anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass. The same material is used for the back of the case, where a glimpse into the performance of one of Seiko’s reliable automatic movements is granted. The watch comes fitted on a brushed and polished stainless steel bracelet but also comes with an additional blue calf leather strap with white contrast stitching that transforms the watch into a more casual and low-key accompaniment for pairing with smart attire.
The Seiko Presage “Ao-Fuji” Sharp Edged GMT limited edition watch has a palpable, spacious dial that accommodates a power reserve indicator at 9 o’clock and a pointer date sub-scale at 6 o’clock. Its deep blue hue is a shade that Ukiyoe artists, over the centuries, have made famous in images of Mt Fuji in high summer, when the mountain is uncapped of snow and showing its full colour against the backdrop of a clear, cloudless sky. The GMT hand, finished in a silver hue, remains in keeping with the rest of the markers and hands, creating a parred-back aesthetic that can no doubt be enjoyed with an office suit, elegant evening attire, or something a little more relaxed over the weekend. The hour markers are baton style and have been surrounded by minute markers around the periphery of the display. Luminous material has been applied to the surface of the central hour and minute hands to match the indexes for maximum legibility at night. The GMT hand is arrow tipped, enabling it to point precisely at the 24-hour scale applied to the deep blue bezel. Thanks to this second time zone function, the new Seiko Presage “Ao-Fuji” Sharp Edges GMT watch can be used to track multiple time zones at a glance. The Seiko lettering stands in its usual position at 12 o’clock, whilst the “Presage Automatic GMT” lettering has been stamped to the surface of the display at 3 o’clock.
The new limited edition Seiko Presage “Ao-Fuji” Sharp Edged GMT watch is powered by the Caliber 6R64. It can be found in previous GMT watches from the Sharp Edges lineup released last year and performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour, producing a power reserve of 45 hours. It incorporates Seiko’s Diashock technology and comprises 29 jewels.
