Introducing the Oris Sun Wukong Limited Edition Watch
Friday - 31 December 2021
From video games to film to stage plays – Sun Wukong – the fictional Monkey King from the 16th Century - is perhaps one of the most widely known figures in Chinese folklore. To mark the 60th anniversary of the “Monkey King; Uproar in Heaven” film, Oris has released this memorable limited edition watch from its esteemed Aquis Date watch collection. Its stunning dial is designed to capture Sun Wukong’s magical spinning staff in motion. The 41.5mm steel Aquis Date watch is limited to 2000 pieces worldwide and has been developed in collaboration with Shanghai Animation Film Studio Co. (SAFS).
It has been six decades since “The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven” film was created by Wan brothers in 1961. The mythical creature from the 16th-century Chinese classic novel “Journey to the West” features a monkey born from stone who acquires supernatural powers, along with a red pillar that he shrinks to size to create a staff in which he uses to fight his enemies and rebel against heaven. This landmark in Chinese culture is the inspiration behind the new limited edition Oris Aquis Date watch, which signifies the Second Golden Era of the Chinese Film industry. Upon the surface of the dial’s rich blue canvas is a decoration that depicts the motion of the monkey’s spinning staff through the use of a red second hand and its golden tip. Before we look at the new Oris Sun Wukong Limited Edition watch in more detail, some key features of the model include; a unidirectional rotating bezel, a 41.5mm diameter, a stainless steel construction, and a 200-meter water-resistant case that holds an automatic movement at its centre.
A closer look at the new Oris Sun Wukong Limited Edition watch
As mentioned, the case design of the new Oris Sun Wukong limited edition watch is based on the reliable Oris Aquis Date model. The 41.5mm diver’s watch is a multi-piece case construction crafted from stainless steel with a unidirectional rotating bezel that is finished in the same matching blue ceramic colour as seen in the dial. This unidirectional diving bezel is marked with a 60-minute scale to help measure diving time safely and effectively. To use it, simply rotate the bezel and align the triangular marker with the minute hand at the beginning of your dive. Partnered with the case’s 300-meter water-resistant capability and a screw-down crown with a crown protector - the case of the new Oris Sun Wukong Limited Edition watch is perfectly prepped for underwater activity. The back of the case is also screwed-down and boasts special engravings upon its surface.
Despite sharing some major characteristics with the Aquis Date watch, the limited edition Sun Wukong model is a clear departure from the standard models from the brand’s core range. The caseback boasts imagery of Sun Wukong’s face as it appears in the “The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven” film. Accompanying this special engraving is the limited edition serial number of the watch and a reference to the model’s impressive 300-meter water-resistant capability.
Also differing from standard Oris Aquis Date watches is the dial of this new Oris Sun Wukong Limited Edition watch. Its bright red second hand is tipped with a golden point, nodding to the red pillar with golden tips that the mythical monkey shrinks to form his weapon. Capturing the motion of the spinning staff is a dial effect that is achieved through repeated shades and flashes of blue that grow and diminish in size to suggest a constant motion. This spinning staff effect across the dial is adorned with baton hour marker and chunky central dive hands that have been treated with Super-LumiNova, creating a tangible and three-dimensional surface that plays with the light underneath the watch’s strong anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass front. The date aperture in this model is positioned at 6 o’clock against a black background to enhance legibility against the multi-tone blue dial.
Whether a fan of the “The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven” production or not, what you can’t escape when admiring the design of this Oris Sun Wukong watch is the model’s impeccable water-ready capacity. A rugged stainless steel bracelet with links finished in a mix of fine-brushed and polished effects complete the “dive tool” look of this watch. The bracelet is integrated with a foldable clasp and an extendable diving mechanism for wearing over the top of a wetsuit.
Finally, inside the robust case of the new Oris Sun Wukong Limited Edition watch is the Oris 733 Calibre. The self-winding movement is a tried and tested engine that has featured throughout the brand’s extensive catalogue, proving its worth as a reliable and accurate beating heart. The movement offers central hours, minutes, sweep seconds and date functions as well as a quick setting, stop setting device. It provides a 38-hour power reserve and beats to the rhythm of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
