Introducing the Arnold & Son Double Tourbillon White Gold Malachite and Aventurine Watches
Monday - 15 May 2023
The new Double Tourbillon Malachite and Aventurine watches from Arnold & Son’s Grandes Complications collection rely on two tourbillon regulators to control the separate time zones revealed upon their stunning stone and glass displays
John Arnold’s work as a talented 18th Century watchmaker has long been celebrated throughout Europe, having developed marine chronometers that became important instruments for navigators wanting to calculate longitude. Reliable travel companions have always been at the heart of the company’s skill set and no watch demonstrates that more than the new Double Tourbillon models for 2023. In essence, the Double Tourbillon models are two watches rolled into one. They display two different time zones via independent sub-counters and to do this, they require two separate tourbillon regulators. Some of the previous watches from this collection are inspired by the cosmos with their blue aventurine and green malachite dials that shimmer majestically under the light. The models are both crafted from 18ct white gold and are executed to the highest standards at Arnold & Son. Due to their unique allure and an exquisite choice in materials, each model deserves an introduction of its own.
The new Arnold & Son Double Tourbillon White Gold Malachite watch
The green malachite version of the new Arnold & Son Double Tourbillon watch is one half of two parts representing the earth, whilst the blue aventurine version represents the stone of the sky. Governed by a sense of symmetry across the display, the home time at the top is displayed vertically, balanced by the local time at the bottom of the dial. The two separate dials are set against a white opal surface, enabling the markings on the scale and the hands to stand out with contrast. Whilst the dial at noon is represented by crisp black Roman numerals, the sub-counter at 6 o’clock is represented in black Arabic numerals.
The new Arnold & Son Double Tourbillon White Gold Aventurine watch
The deep blue alluring tones of blue aventurine represent the skies and tie in nicely with the heritage of John Arnold’s first watches, where his marine chronometers were used to tell the local time by observing the stars in the sky and the time in a distant location. These chronometers have served as inspiration for many technical instruments that followed, yet this Double Tourbillon White Gold watch, with its sophisticated calibre can track two time zones to the minute. Similar to the green malachite version, the blue aventurine Double Tourbillon watch by Arnold & Son features the same two white opal counters that are balanced by two tourbillons on the east and west axis of the dial.
Subtly following the design features of classic GMT watches, the blued steel hands seen in the two sub-counters of each watch are arrow tipped. The beauty of this watch, however, is the ability to independently adjust both dials accurately thanks to unusual offsets at 15, 30 and 45 minutes. Other specifications of these two new Double Tourbillon watches for 2023 by Arnold & Son are shared with previous models from the collection. These include a beautiful 18ct white gold case that measures a width of 43.5mm, and the two crowns that sit at 2 and 7 o’clock on the sides of the case. These are used for adjusting the two separate timezones independently as well as winding each respective movement. Interestingly, the twin tourbillons are attached to a skeletonised white gold bridge structure to create a three-dimensional layout. Mirror-polished and satin-finished effects can be appreciated across these bridges, creating a complex and intriguing horological demonstration.
Both the green malachite and blue aventurine versions of the new Double Tourbillon White Gold watches from Arnold & Son are topped with a piece of anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass – a material that is repeated on the underside of the watch, where a full view of the movement can be appreciated. The manual winding double tourbillon movement fitted to the heart of this luxurious white gold case is the A&S8513, which comprises 42 jewels and beats at a rhythm of 21,6000 vibrations per hour. With a double barrel, it can hold a power reserve of 90 hours and features independent hour and minute hands for local and home time.
The beautiful green malachite version of the Arnold & Son Double Tourbillon White Gold watch is fitted on a matching green alligator leather strap with hand-stitched tone-on-tone decoration and a black alligator lining. The strap secures to the wrist with an 18ct white gold folding clasp. The blue aventurine version is completed on a blue alligator leather strap with purple alligator lining and a white gold clasp.
