How it all started
Forming the bedrock behind these incredibly durable and tough wristwatches for action and adventure is a friendship between two individuals and a shared passion for perfection. Ian Elliot and Alex Brown began with a blank sheet of paper. They brought 20 years of watchmaking expertise in the realm of sports watches to the table but wanted to be able to fuse their talents together to offer the modern-day wearer something altogether new and appealing. After years of late nights and early mornings, Elliot Brown officially opened its doors in 2013. Each collection now has its own unique nod to the brand’s Dorset roots whether that be the Kimmeridge range named after Kimmeridge Bay or the elegantly robust series of wristwatches belonging to the Canford range named after Canford Cliffs.
Inspired by the coastal, outdoor lifestyle they share, Ian and Alex realised from the beginning that their watches had to be made to withstand harsh external environments if they were going to get noticed. Designed for resisting mud, sand, water and winds, this obsessive approach to perfection combined with an engineering background enabled them to identify the need for adding functional enhancements and new features to their designs. The brand’s lines each tell a specific story behind a project close to the founders’ hearts, including the Canford watch collection, which we’re going to look at next…
The key features of the Canford watch
The Canford watch series is a quietly handsome family of models that comprise metallic champagne dials, matte gunmetal cases, and high-contrast black displays to name just a few options. The surface effects of the cases from this range give them a masculine and adventure-seeking edge and include matte vapour-blasted gunmetal, satin brushed stainless steel and matte steel. The movements within these outdoor watches are secured inside a shock-absorbing steel movement housing. The band sources solid 316L marine-grade stainless steel for some of its broad 44mm cases and seals them with domed sapphire crystal glass fronts for added durability and clarity.
Elliot Brown ensures that the elements on the dials of these watches are flooded with plenty of long-lasting Super-LumiNova material for outstanding legibility, whilst internal rotating bezels are operated by an upper crown that promises a glass-smooth operation under the fingertips. The crowns for adjusting time and turning the bezel are triple-sealed to block out moisture, whilst aggressive knurling promises an easy grip. The compressor case of these watches is bolted down as opposed to threaded for added durability.
The new Elliot Brown Canford 202-027-L23
The reference 202-027-L23 from the Canford range by Elliot Brown boasts a deep sunray blue dial that enables light to bounce off its silky surface for refined and opulent timekeeping. Its cream Super-LumiNova finishes giving the model a subtle vintage-inspired edge, enhanced all the more by the indexes around the hour track. The 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock markers are represented in slim Arabic numerals, whilst the remaining hour markers are stick-shaped and accompanied by an outer minutes and seconds scale that is beautifully detailed and just as easy to read. The brushed bronze hands at the centre of the dial really make this Canford watch a special one to collect. The internally rotating bezel has also been treated with the same luminous material, enabling them to glow in a rich green hue at night or in dark conditions, and making it easy to measure elapsed time whether you are using it for cooking timings or something more critical.
The new Elliot Brown Canford 202-027-L23 watch is forged from solid 316L marine-grade stainless steel and promises 200-meter water resistance. Verified by ISO standards, the watch is also implemented with a steel and elastomer damped shock-absorbing movement holder and is also shock-resistant to ISO1413. Its domed and anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass front is also incredibly scratch-resistant and seals to the case, which features two crowns that are triple sealed and knurled.
The bolted-down caseback of the Canford watch has oversized seals and helps to maintain the watch’s water-resistant capability, protecting a Ronda 5-jewel movement inside. This Swiss-made quartz movement has a battery life of 3 years with a date feature that is displayed at 4 o’clock on the blue dial. A set of screw-in steel strap bars are accompanied by the model’s strap and come with a tool to make strap changes a breeze when wanting to transform the look of this handsome watch. The model comes fitted on a dark brown premium oiled leather strap with a nubuck lining and a stainless steel deployant buckle.
