Certina Releases New DS Super PH500M Divers Watch
Thursday - 19 May 2022
The new Certina DS Super PH500M dive watch now comes presented in a rich ocean-blue colour and promises many advanced features such as 500-meter water resistance, a state-of-the-art movement, and special anti-magnetic and shock-resistant qualities.
A couple of years ago, Certina released a super-competitive bold and colourful dive watch that impressed with its quality, its design and, of course, its reasonable price tag. Its water resistance? 500 meters. Its intention? To support daily journeys, whether on land or sea. The truth is, the DS Super PH500M dive tool belongs to a genre of watches that are worn not only for their functional design and their capability underwater but above all, their style. Many dive watch collectors don’t wear their watch for extreme underwater exploration, yet the Certina DS Super PH500M watch has you covered if you intend to.
The roots of the DS Super PH500M watch
Despite its modern styling, there is a lot of history behind the design of the new Certina DS Super PH500M watch. Its predecessor, dating back to 1969, was worn on the wrist of four scientists who wore the watch during a two-month research project at the Tektite I underwater laboratory. After proving its success underwater, Certina built and evolved this diving watch, adding impressive complications and improved features whilst teaming up with the German diving association, VDST to create an all-around more superior dive watch.
The Certina DS Super PH500M watch has already been released in a black dial version and a vivid orange dial – orange being a chosen colour for its easy detection underwater. Equipped with a legible unidirectional rotating bezel, easy-to-read, legible dial markings and a comfortable black rubber strap – what more could you want in a dive watch? Well, maybe a version in deep blue?
The new Certina DS Super PH500M watch is dressed in an all-new deep blue aesthetic with shots of vivid orange fed through its precise, clean and retro-inspired design. This special dive watch range was met with resounding success when it first launched not so long ago. Chances are, it’s the vintage dive watch styling of the watch, plus the state-of-the-art mechanism that makes it such a no-brainer for many dive watch fans. In addition to its impressive 500-meter water resistance, the Certina dive watch is also integrated with a Nivachron™ balance spring to withstand the damaging effects of magnetic fields, making the DS Super PH500M watch a companion for every day and every journey.
The Sea Turtle Conservancy and the Certina DS concept
If you take a look at the caseback of previous models from the same range, the collaboration between Certina and VDST can be seen in the form of a special engraving depicting two deep-sea divers and the German company’s initials. With the new blue Certina DS Super PH500M watch, a reference to the Sea Turtle Conservancy is made with an image of a sea turtle and the lettering forming a frame around the edge. This specially engraved caseback nods to Certina’s partnership with the Florida-based organisation, which began back in 2017. The organisation’s primary aim is to extend and protect the sea turtle, ensuring its survival by conserving its habitat. The Sea Turtle Conservancy was founded back in 1959, around the same time that Certina was developing its DS Concept. For over 60 years, the DS concept has been synonymous with maximum resistance, proving itself an effective way to determine the quality of all Certina watches built for daring mountaineers and deep-sea divers.
As well as Certina’s DS concept, ISO 6425 standards are also met in the design of the new blue Certina DS Super PH500M watch. With these safety measures and diver-friendly functions passed by such standards, the watch can officially be classified as a dive watch, making it an ideal companion for all manner of sporting events, not just for underwater ventures.
More about the new DS Super PH500M blue watch
The 43mm dive watch is crafted from 316L stainless steel and features a strong piece of anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass, which forms a shield across the surface of the model’s rich blue dial, protecting it from denting, scratching moisture, heat and light damage. Under this strong piece of glass is a set of rectangular-shaped hour markers treated with Super-LumiNova. The luminous sword-shaped hour hand accompanies an orange-coloured minute hand for enhanced readability, plus a second hand with a diamond-shaped pointer tip. The DS lettering at the 6 o’clock location is also executed in a matching orange hue, as is the trim around the hour markers at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. Lastly, an easily readable date window is positioned at 3 o’clock, dressed against a lightly shaded background. The entire dial is surrounded by a stainless steel unidirectional rotating bezel with a blue aluminium section marked with a luminous 60-minute dive scale for measuring elapsed time whilst underwater.
Inside the robust, highly water-resistant case of the new Certina DS Super PH500M blue watch is the Powermatic 80 movement, which performs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and once fully wound provides a power reserve of 80 hours. The Nivachron™ balance spring offers several advantages for the dive watch. Pushing the boundaries of precision and innovation, it not only allows a considerable reduction in the influence of the residual effect created by a magnetic field on the running of a watch, but proves itself effective against temperature variations experienced in wearing conditions, plus it promises excellent shock resistance, as well as a significant improvement in chronometric performance.
The new blue Certina DS Super PH500M watch is completed on a matching deep blue NATO style strap with a stainless steel fastening.
