Bremont Unveils New ionBird Rolls Royce Watch
Monday - 28 September 2020
Vintage aesthetics and high-tech features come together in Bremont’s latest release, the Bremont ionBird Rolls Royce watch. Launched to commemorate Bremont as the Official Timing Partner for Rolls Royce’s ground-breaking all-electric speed record attempt, the stunning timepiece sees two British aviation icons collaborate for the first time and pioneer a zero-emissions operation that could change everything we know about sustainable air travel.
Aptly named the ‘Spirit of Innovation’, the electric aircraft is being developed to become the fastest of its kind in history, estimating to overtake the current record of 213mph by reaching speeds of over 300mph. Rolls Royce has already established a remarkable heritage supporting record flying speed attempts, with one of their most notable dating back to the 1930’s when R J Mitchell’s Supermarine S.6B powered by the state-of-the-art Rolls-Royce ‘R’ engine flew to victory in the Schneider Trophies. It is no surprise then that they continue to make another run for the record books with their all-electric zero emissions aircraft.
Bremont has already paid homage to the many of Rolls Royce’s achievements with their range of Supermarine diving watches in particular honouring the Rolls Royce powered Supermarine aircraft S.6B. As part of their partnership with the Spirit of Innovation, Bremont has been involved in the design of the plane’s cockpit which will feature a Bremont stopwatch. The company has also machined canopy release parts from its Henley-on-Thames manufacturing facility. Most notably, the British watch manufacturer has launched the Bremont ionBird Rolls Royce watch to celebrate the alliance, a watch the test pilots will wear during the development of the aircraft and during the record-breaking flight.
Nick English, Co-Founder of Bremont, “The countless synergies in this project really do beggar belief. The passion for precision engineering, British manufacturing and aviation to name but a few. It is an extraordinary privilege to be working with the wonderful Rolls-Royce team on this project. As pilots ourselves, we (my brother Giles and I) have known Phill, the Rolls-Royce test pilot, for many years and Rolls-Royce owns the Spitfire that our father operated when he was alive. The electrification of the air is such an important milestone in these challenging climatic times, and to be playing a small part is very rewarding indeed.”
The Bremont ionBird Rolls Royce watch boasts a clean and classic style with plenty of aviation DNA incorporated within. It’s 43mm diameter case is engineered from custom 465 titanium and constructed using the brand’s innovative Trip-Tick construction technology. The bi-directional rotating sapphire bezel contrasts beautifully against the polished lightweight case and provides an additional time zone with its 24 hour scale. Turn the timepiece around, and you are greeted to a stunning 465 stainless steel exhibition case back which shows off elements of the COSC certified movement.
The BE-93-2AV automatic chronometer movement powers central hands for hours, minutes and seconds, a GMT hand and a date at 4.5H, all handsomely showcased on the black metal dial and through Superluminova coated hands and numerals. The mechanical calibre also comes equipped with 25 jewels and promises a power reserve of 42 hours and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The piece is protected by domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal and completed by a choice of a brown nubuck leather strap or a titanium bracelet.
