Baume & Mercier Releases Baume Ocean Limited Edition
Wednesday - 02 June 2021
The two new Baume Ocean Limited Edition watches from Baume & Mercier, made in collaboration with SEQUAL Initiative and NGO WFO, demonstrate the watchmaker’s sheer commitment to making an environmental change. By raising important awareness of marine conversation, the design of the Baume Ocean uses sustainable materials from the development of its case right through to the finishing of its unique presentation box.
If you haven’t yet checked out the new Baume watch collection by Baume & Mercier, do so, because these two new limited edition Baume Ocean watches share many characteristics with the line recently released by the manufacture in an innovative palette of violet, green, black, red and blue colours. Having recently talked about other new Baume & Mercier releases like the reinvigorated Riviera collection, it’s clear that Baume & Mercier is changing in its direction but not in its philosophy. In addition to re-releasing the new revitalised Riviera watch – an iconic and highly collectable steel sports watch from the 70s - Baume & Mercier directs a focus on its commitment to eco-responsibility and innovation, particularly in the area of marine conservation.
The two new Baume Ocean Limited Edition watches from Baume & Mercier echo the same minimalist dial layout as the Baume collection with a unique 12 o’clock crown and a simplified dial. The two key elements to the design are its sustainable construction using materials forged by its two collaborative partners and its ergonomic design that focuses primarily on comfort. The two new Baume Ocean Limited Edition watches also feature an innovative hour display and are powered by an automatic movement encased within a bodywork crafted from recycled plastic, reinforced with glass fibre.
The work of NGO WFO and SEQUAL Initiative
Waste Free Oceans is dedicated to cleaning plastic from the ocean. The plastic it does collect it then transforms into new and innovative products, and isn’t that the way the whole world should be going right now? The company aims to raise awareness whilst carrying out this important work whilst partnering with recyclers, brands and converters to accomplish its mission. Waste Free Oceans (NGO WFO) is based in Brussels and has teamed with the Swiss watchmaker to create the two new Baume & Mercier Baume Ocean limited Edition watches. The company, however, does operate in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, as well as America also. The “ocean catchers” used by the company can remove anything from 2 to 8 tonnes of floating marine debris, attaching to boats as they collect and remove the litter. Likewise, reducing damage to marine life and cleaning up our oceans is a concept considered equally as important to SEQUAL Initiative - a collaborative ocean cleaning family that focuses on clean-ups that are carried out around the entire globe, bringing value to the waste it collects. SEQUAL Initiative is not only made up of a network of organisations and individuals with a passion to do better by the world’s oceans, but it also works with waste management experts to transform the marine litter it collects to upcycle the plastic and create inspiring sustainable products from it.
The new Baume & Mercier Baume Ocean Limited Editions
Baume & Mercier clearly works to establish an ecological ethic with the launch of these two limited edition watches from the new Baume series. Both collaborative partners combat marine pollution and the new timepieces, in many ways, are a testament to just that. Both watches demonstrate the use of upcycled products from marine litter and how these materials can be sustainable enough to uphold the integrity and robustness of a luxury wristwatch like the Baume Ocean.
Sheathed in a marble grey-black colour, the two limited edition Baume & Mercier watches come in a blue-accented version ref: M0A10587 and a green-accented iteration ref: M0A10590. Sitting at an unimposing depth of 10.2mm on the wrist, both models measure a diameter of 42mm and have been crafted using recycled plastic cap produced by WFO. Wrapped in green or blue anodized aluminium, the case forms a 30-meter water-resistant housing around the automatic movement that lies within. The construction of the case is formed from 80% recycled plastic and then reinforced for extra toughness and strength with 20% glass fibres. The articulated horns are crafted from a marble grey anodized aluminium to match the sleek finish of the case. The Sellita SW 200, which can be viewed through a sapphire crystal glass caseback, is a self-winding engine that produces a useful 38-hour power reserve once fully wound and performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. If you didn’t already know, the movement has featured fluently throughout the watchmaker’s catalogue, powering everything from the much-loved Classima to the iconic Riviera.
A set of blue or green hands are dressed against a sandblasted and snailed anthracite grey dial in both designs. Arabic numerals take up residence around the outer edge of the track – a feature that is shared with the 42mm models of the new Baume line. Here on the dial, however, is where the limited edition watches differ. The “mise en abyme” effect on the display is achieved through various layers and finishes – donating a sense of depth and definition to the dial. This effect is paired with an inner hour track in white Arabic numerals. The correct hour is still dictated by the main hour hand which extends far beyond the hour track itself for a completely unique look.
Both Baume & Mercier Baume Ocean Limited Edition watches are fitted with sustainable straps crafted from SEAQUAL® YARN, made with upcycled marine plastic. As its name suggests, these upcycled bands have been produced by SEQUAL Initiative and feature blue and green stitching respective to their dial flange and hand colours. Lined with a natural cork on the inside, these RPET straps are designed for comfort on the wrist and enclose with a traditionally styled pin buckle fastening. Since both watches are indeed limited editions, the Baume Ocean models come in recycled polyester felt-lined packaging, crafted into a striking hexagonal shape. 5% of every sale of the Baume & Mercier Baume Ocean Limited Edition watch will go directly to the Waste Free Oceans company to help support its future work.
