A Look at the Breitling Superocean Heritage Green Watches
Monday - 24 January 2022
Here at Jura watches, we have a soft spot for retro-inspired dive watches, particularly the two strikingly handsome green dial versions of the Breitling Superocean Heritage II range. Today we take a look at the key features of the green Breitling Superocean Heritage B20 Automatic 42 watch – a legible time and date diving companion, and the Breitling Superocean Heritage B01 Chronograph 44 watch.
The re-announcement of the Breitling Superocean Heritage watch back in 2007 was a very happy time for dive watch enthusiasts, especially those with a love for the retro-inspired kind. The truth is, the Breitling Superocean watch really made an impact back in 1956 when it was first launched. For a start, it offered a 660-feet water resistance, which was pretty impressive for its time. The newer versions of this luxury dive watch (that’s the Superocean Heritage models) remain incredibly faithful to their predecessors, carrying over many virtues of the original Superocean watch, whist bringing the model up to date with the needs of the modern wearer. This is why recent releases like the Breitling Superocean Heritage II with a striking green dial. Are so well received amongst dive watch collectors. They’re incredibly versatile and they appeal to every kind of enthusiast, from those who have closely followed the heritage of the famous Swiss watch brand, to those who share a love for stylish dive watches, as well as those who take to the water on a serious level.
When the Breitling Superocean Heritage II watch resurfaced in 2017, it brought with it some notable modifications. Firstly, it’s worth mentioning that it featured a unidirectional rotating bezel that enabled the wearer to calculate dive times safely without running the risk of accidentally extending dive time. Secondly, these models were launched to celebrate the brands 60th anniversary. These Breitling Superocean Heritage II watches returned to the triangular hour markers and the stick-type minute markers. Amongst these new amendments, the new Superocean watch featured a 120 tooth system on its bezel that promised a smooth operation under the fingertips, as well as a more precise adjustment. Applied to the surface of the bezel was a new high tech ceramic inlay for improved scratch resistance and impact resistance. A screw-locked crown worked in conjunction with the case’s 200-meter water resistance, shielding the movement from any damage caused by moisture.
The Breitling Superocean B20 Automatic 42 Green watch
Extending the Superocean Heritage II line further is this green dial and green bezel iteration. There is, of course, a chronograph version of this very vintage-looking dive watch, which we’ll cover a little later on. The non-chronograph version, however, offers a simple three-handed display with a date window whereas the chronograph version is sportier and comes equipped with a trio of chronograph dials. When the original Superocean Heritage II models were released a few years ago, they came equipped with one of Breitling’s in-house manufactured movements – the B20 – a COSC-certified movement.
The striking green dial of this Superocean Heritage II watch is certainly what makes this diver’s watch stand out. Its 42mm stainless steel case structure is once again integrated with 200-meter water resistance and the case stands upon the wrist with a 14.3mm height. Included in this height is the protective layer of anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass, which shields the deep green display from dust, scratching, light, heat and moisture damage. The cambered sapphire crystal glass has received anti-reflective treatment upon both of its sides, which eradicates the risk of any glare affecting the wearer’s view into the dial.
The dashes around the minute track are combined with baton hour markers, along with a double index at 12 o’clock. In true Superocean style, the tip of the hour hand is executed with an unmissable arrow-shaped finish. The minute hand tapers at the tip and follows the shape of a sword. Both of these hands, together with the hour markers have received a generous layer of Super-LumiNova to assist with easy timekeeping during the night or whilst persuing dark underwater depths. Capturing the essence of the open seas, the vivid green dial matches perfectly with a supple black rubber strap. Its texture evokes a mesh-style pattern to comply with the metal mesh-style stainless steel bracelets that Breitling uses for many of its Superocean dive watches. The rubber strap secures with a stainless steel folding clasp engraved with the Breitling logo.
Inside the robust steel case of this Breitling Superocean Heritage watch is the automatic B20 movement based on the Tudor Caliber MT5612. This self-winding engine vibrates 28,800 times an hour and the movement produces a useful 70-hour power reserve once fully wound. Complete with 26 jewels, the movement is concealed behind a screwed-in stainless steel caseback, engraved with the Breitling lettering. The movement is certified by the COSC – the Swiss official Chronometer Testing Institute.
The Breitling Superocean Heritage B01 Chronograph 44 Green watch
The green dial version of the Breitling Superocean Heritage B01 Chronograph 44 watch is larger in size but offers all the same robust materials and qualities. Once again, the watch features a ceramic inlay upon its unidirectional rotating bezel for superior scratch resistance. This surrounds a rich green dial with chronograph counters placed in the traditional 3-6-9 layout. These have been filled in black and offer 30-minute, 12-hour and running seconds respectively. The central chronograph 1/4th of second hand is accompanied by Super-LumiNova hour and minute hands and the date has been repositioned to 4:30.
Inside this robust 200-meter water-resistant stainless steel case is the in-house manufactured Breitling B01 movement, which produces a 70-hour power reserve. It also comprises 47 jewels and beats at the same rhythm as the B20 movement with 28,800 vibrations per hour. A screw-locked crown with two gaskets is once again present in this design, assisting with the case’s impressive water resistance, as does a screwed-backed case. Again, the mesh-style rubber strap secures this watch to the wrist with a stainless steel folding clasp and a push-button release mechanism.
