Luminox is supporting the Global Ocean Race sailing teams as they prepare for the final leg of the 30,000 mile course.
The watch brand is Official Timekeeper of the 2011-2012 Global Ocean Race (GOR) and has provided accurate timing for sailors and spectators since the first leg began in Mallorca, Spain, on 25th September 2011.
"What the Global Ocean Race sailors are doing when racing around the world on their 40ft yachts is still beyond my imagination and I wouldn't have the courage to do anything similar," said Andre Bernheim, co-owner of Luminox. "It is high adrenaline, pure adventure and reserved for a few people around the globe who dare to put their lives at such risks. All this fits perfectly with the brand statement of Luminox."
So far the Class40 yachts have made stops in Cape Town, South Africa; Wellington, New Zealand; Punta del Este, Uruguay; and Charleston, USA. Four teams are now preparing for the fifth and final leg, leaving Charleston on 19th May and sailing to their final destination, Les Sables d'Olonne in France.
Each team member was presented with a special Luminox watch to assist them in the race. “When sailing, it is vital to have a watch that is not only accurate, but also water resistant, robust and easy to read in any conditions,” says Tolo Frau, President of GOR's Commercial Division. “These are precisely the essential qualities of Luminox, the GOR’s official timekeepers. This agreement allows us to offer the event’s fans a very exact timekeeping for the GOR."
