Up Close with the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Sport Chronograph Watches
Monday - 26 June 2023
Parmigiani Fleurier redesigns and re-styles the original GT watch in the form of two more elegant and sophisticated chronographs.
The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF watch collection is known for its refined sports-luxe appeal, not to mention its clear, highly-readable and simple dial design. Since 2021, the Fleurier-based brand has been growing this collection and has released several more incredibly exciting additions to the line at this year's 2023 Geneva Watches & Wonders event. Two models to emerge from the Tonda PF Sport sub-category are the Sport Chronograph watches in a panda dial design. They feature silver dials with black-filled counters and come in a choice of stainless steel or 18ct rose gold. The Chronograph models have been released alongside two Tonda PF Sport models with a date function, a deep ruby and sand grey no-date time-only Tonda PF Automatic 36mm model, a platinum Micro Rotor watch, a Flying Tourbillon, a Rattrapante Split Seconds Chronograph model and a GMT Rattrapante watch to name just a few. It suggests that Parmigiani Fleurier is focussing more than anything else on its Tonda PF watch collection for the foreseeable – a series that is renowned amongst enthusiasts for its signature elements like a knurled bezel and special patterned guilloche dial, not to mention a reliable movement that is built from the ground up at the company’s facility. Let’s take a look at the new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Sport Chronograph watches.
The new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Sport Chronograph watches have panda dials
The two new Tonda PF Sport Chronograph watches from Parmigiani Fleurier both measure a 42mm diameter. Although a fraction wider than the 41mm Tonda PF Sport watches, this can be felt in the overall character of the watch, which is described by experts at Parmigiani Fleurier as a redesigned, elegant and refined version of the original GT. Some pronounced features can be appreciated about these new Sport time-and-date models and the chronograph versions. All feature a more prominent knurled bezel with deeper grooves that adds a bolder character to the design. In addition to this, the watches can be appreciated for their guilloche patterned dials that use the “Triangular nail” design. In the time and date models, the date aperture has been downsized and relocated to the 6 o’clock location, whilst the chronograph models also feature reworked hour markers and redesigned hands that have received a coating of Super-LumiNova upon their surface for assisted timekeeping in the night or in dark conditions.
Parmigiani Fleurier has been careful to keep the spirit of the Tonda PF truly intact in these newly developed chronograph watches, despite the redesigning of the popular watch and its GT ancestor. Modernised and refreshed, the indices on the Sport and Sport Chronograph models have been shortened, whilst the oscillating weight has been inspired by the wheel of the Ferrari 250 GTO. The silver-toned dials of the two new PF Sport Chronograph watches have been adorned with the “Clou Triangulaire” guilloche effect and feature a 30-minute sub-dial at 3 o’clock, a small seconds sub-counter at 6 o’clock and a 12-hour totaliser at 9 o’clock. The chronograph counters are filled in with a black colour and are framed by faceted, polished indexes around the hour track. A date window, also filled with black is discreetly nestled between the 4 and 5 o’clock. All of these features are protected underneath a pane of anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass front. The same material is used on the back of the case, showing off the performance and arrangement of an in-house developed engine.
The 18ct rose gold version of the new Tonda PF Sport Chronograph watch features matching rose golden hour markers and skeletonised delta-shaped hands, whilst the stainless steel models feature rhodium-coated elements. Inside a 100-meter water-resistant case is Parmigiani Fleurier’s Calibre PF707 – a self-winding beating heart that is COSC-certified and capable of performing at a frequency of 36,600 vibrations per hour. It produces a 65-hour power reserve and comprises 42 jewels amongst some 35 individual components. Through the exhibition caseback of the new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Sport Chronograph watch are the movement and its exquisite finishes. These include hand-bevelled edges, satin-finished open-worked bridges, a 22ct gold oscillating weight and other sandblasted, skeletonised and polished finishes.
Reinforcing a sporty style on the wrist, these two new 2023 Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Sport Chronograph watches are fitted on a textured black rubber band that secures with a stainless steel or 18ct rose gold folding clasp depending on the chosen model.
