Partners of the Skies; Breitling Releases Two RAF Red Arrows 60th Anniversary Watches
Wednesday - 29 May 2024
Want to own a piece of British heritage? Get your hands on one of the new Breitling Avenger Red Arrows collaborations at Jura Watches – a celebration of 60 years of the Royal Air Force Aerobatics Team.
Painting the skies with red and blue vapour trails, the Red Arrows represent the very best in agility, speed and performance in aerobatic flying. The Royal Air Force Aerobatics Team stands for more than just pretty colours in the sky, however. The RAF pilots that steer these elegant planes have frontline fighter experience and will soon be celebrating 60 years of aerobatic displays, not just across British skies but all over the world.
First formed in 1964, the Red Arrows have become an important part of British heritage. As well as celebrating 100 years of British Airways, the team can add its many Royal-related events to its resume. As ambassadors of the United Kingdom, only the best RAF pilots are chosen. You may realise that these strict standards of excellence may sound familiar in watchmaking and are shared by the famous Swiss brand, Breitling, which just so happens to have been nurturing a partnership with the Royal Air Force Aerobatics Team for 34 years. Over the years, we have seen several timepieces launched by the prestigious watchmaker, each one bearing nods to the team’s distinctive emblem throughout its design. Now it’s time for two more spectacular timepieces; the Breitling Avenger 42 Red Arrows 60th Anniversary Edition watch and the Breitling Avenger B01 Chronograph 44 Red Arrows watch.
The pilots sitting in the cockpit of a Red Arrows fuselage are looking for a few key qualities in a wristwatch. Precision, legibility and comfort. Perhaps now, more than ever, the aerobatics team couldn’t wish for better watch experts by its side. Breitling has a track record of producing excellent watches for aviation. A quick glance through the brand’s portfolio will demonstrate this. The new models, released in time for the team’s 60th anniversary celebrations will equip the pilots as they begin the first of many displays, beginning at the end of this month.
The Breitling Avenger 42 Red Arrows 60th Anniversary Edition watch
Both of the new Avenger watches released in honour of the Red Arrow’s 60th anniversary carry the faithful characteristics of the Avenger watch DNA. The collection has always been loved for its designs that carefully combine pilot watch and dive watch values. The timepieces are easy to read, day or night and offer a water-resistant capability that begins at 300 meters. Some even offer a staggering 3000-meter water resistance.
The Breitling Avenger 42 Red Arrows 60th Anniversary Edition watch has been released in honour of the work carried out by the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund. The charity supports past and present RAF pilots and their families. As such, a percentage of the funds raised from the sales of these watches will go towards the charity. The design of the new Breitling Avenger 42 Red Arrows 60th Anniversary Edition watch has been released in a limited run of just 360 pieces. The design presents the time in a black and blue dial. A rich blue central section is surrounded by a black minute scale with red highlights that add character and depth to the design. The red accents continue throughout the design, where the arrow-shaped tip is also represented in the same red colour. The “Avenger” lettering above the 6 o’clock is also represented in red, as is the trimmed border of the date window at 3 o’clock. Across the other side of the dial is the RAF Red Arrows emblem, designed back in 1980.
The new Breitling Avenger 42 Red Arrows 60th Anniversary Edition is powered by the Calibre 17, which boasts COSC certification, along with 38 hours of power reserve once fully wound. The movement is displayed behind a closed caseback where special engravings denoting the 60th anniversary celebration can be admired. The watch also comes on a choice of two straps; a stainless steel three-link bracelet with a folding clasp, or a blue calfskin leather strap with red contrast stitching.
The New Breitling Avenger B01 Chronograph 44 Red Arrows Watch
The new Breitling Avenger B01 Chronograph 44 Red Arrows watch is another celebratory design. This model, however, takes on a stealthier physique with a black ceramic case integrated with a water-resistant rating of 300 meters. As an official sponsor of the Red Arrows, the watch comes with everything needed in a cockpit tool. The legible dial, again, is represented in a deep blue hue with a black minute track around the edge and three black-filled counters at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. Instantly visible is the 9 o’clock counter where the “Nine Diamond” emblem can be seen in red. Across the other side is the 30-minute counter with a red hand. The 6 o’clock sub-counter features the 12-hour totaliser with another matching red hand. A date window is also nestled inside the counter. The hour markers and the central hands have all been treated with Super-LumiNova, which glows richly in the dark underneath a strong piece of anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass.
This new Breitling Avenger B01 Chronograph 44 Red Arrows watch comes fitted on the same blue calfskin strap design as seen in the Avenger 42mm steel version. Contrasting red stitching running down the sides helps set the band off, securing with a titanium folding clasp engraved with the Breitling name. The watch is also powered by an in-house movement. Certified to chronometric standards, the COSC automatic movement provides a staggering 70-hour power reserve once fully wound.
