NEW Watches & Wonders 2024 Release – The Montblanc 1858 Geosphere CARBO2 0 Oxygen Watch
Monday - 22 April 2024
The new 1858 Geosphere CARBO2 0 Oxygen watch is limited to 1969 pieces worldwide and displays a world time feature on rotating northern and hemisphere globes that illuminate at night. To add to the allure and mechanical complexity of this watch, it now boasts an innovative proprietary material named CARBO2.
Over the last few days, we’ve seen some stunning timepieces unveiled by Montblanc - a Swiss master of luxury watches and writing instruments. One rare design in particular was the Unveiled Minerva Monopusher Chronograph watch, which follows in the footsteps of last year’s model. The 1858 Unveiled Timekeeper Minerva Chronograph of 2023 featured the Minerva trademark chronograph complication but was like no other timepiece on the market. Its family, the Unveiled series, is quirky, functional and available in several drool-worthy designs, but this one featured no pusher!
In that same vein, Montblanc has released a new timepiece that shares some of these features. Released at this year’s Watches & Wonders 2024 showcase in Geneva, Switzerland just days ago, it carries the same style, some similar functions, architecture and a similar movement arrangement. On top of that there were releases from the 1858 series, including the new 1858 Geosphere CARBO2 0 Oxygen Limited Edition Watch, which I’m going to cover today. First, a little background on the 1858 Geosphere.
The Back Story on the 1858 Geosphere
The 1858 Geosphere collection by Montblanc honours outdoor lovers and those with a thirst for exploration. Those who seek to pursue the Seven Summit challenge, for example, are on the brand’s radar for this rugged type of tool watch. These adventure-seekers who conquer the highest mountains have made use of the design in previous years. A reference is even made to the seven summits, which can be seen in the watch’s small red dots located on the two hemispheres of the dial.
It is the durability of the 1858 Geosphere that makes it such a great adventure watch. Built like the capable tool that it is, it features a robust case that is hefty and built solidly enough to face any challenge thrown in its path. Quite simply, travelling around the world has never been easier than with a Montblanc 1858 Geosphere watch strapped to your wrist. Its striking geographical design is a complete work of art, showing off both the Northern and Southern hemispheres of the Earth.
The 1858 Geosphere watches released over recent years at prestigious events like the Watches & Wonders showcase, have become more and more interesting each time. Each new edition represents the company’s position within the industry, where high-end, beautifully intricate timepieces are a speciality at Montblanc. The brand has an outstanding portfolio that stretches into the company’s Minerva heritage too. Famous for producing exquisite movements of the highest calibre, Montblanc has been dedicating its time to producing watches that house historic movements, namely those like the Minerva Monopusher Chronograph, which the brand has extended upon this year. As aforementioned, this special limited-edition timepiece is expected to be well sought-after. Having flipped the script, literally, the architecture of the movement is exposed through the side, front and back windows of the Minerva Monopusher Heritage watch. These features act as portals into the intricate mechanics at play. Put on display, in all its unobscured glory, the 192 components of the Calibre MB17.26 work in complete harmony with one another – each one having been placed by hand with utmost care and complete meticulousness.
At the very heart of the mechanism, the column wheel chronograph takes centre stage. This is no ordinary chronograph mechanism either. It is the Minerva 912 patent. It sits atop the movement enhanced by a deep, alluring blue, afforded by the German silver plates and bridges. This innovative splash of colour accentuates a sense of depth and brings the entire engine to life behind a sapphire glass window. The blue-hued elements are also a nice match for the blue sfumato calf leather strap, which it comes fitted on. But, for something more travel-ready, there could be no better watch than the new Montblanc 1858 Geosphere CARBO2 0 Oxygen watch, especially since it features an innovative new material.
The New Montblanc 1858 Geosphere CARBO2 0 Oxygen Watch
The new 1858 Geosphere CARBO2 0 Oxygen Watch, like all other 1858 Geosphere watches from the collection, takes inspiration from Minerva pocket watches that were originally developed for the military. This latest edition uses an innovative case that captures C02 from biogas production and mineral waste produced as a by-product of recycling materials. The powder contains C02 and CACO3, blended with carbon to create a proprietary composite material called CARBO2.
This material can be shaped into a watch case hence the arrival of the new Montblanc 1858 Geosphere CARBO2 0 Oxygen watch. The most appealing aspect of this case, apart from being engineered from an environmentally friendly point of view, is the fact that no two cases are ever the same. Each one is completely unique and presents itself in various shades of dark, sleek carbon fibre.
The new Montblanc 1858 Geosphere CARBO2 0 Oxygen watch measures a confident 43.5mm and boasts a satin finish and the white outline of the Montblanc mountain on the side of the case, enhanced by blue emission lume. The case is topped with a bi-directional titanium ceramic bezel with a fluted finish and blue emission accents on the cardinal points too. The bezel meets with a strong piece of domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass. Flip the case over and you’re granted a stunning decorative display against a titanium caseback. It details a 3D laser colour engraving of the Mont Blanc mountain. The crystal casing on the front of the watch also features a special blue gasket, allowing 0 Oxygen inside the case.
Inside the case of the new Montblanc 1858 Geosphere CARBO2 0 Oxygen watch is the Calibre MB29.25, which promises a 43-hour power reserve. It provides a world time function with turning globes representing Northern and Southern Hemisphere locations. A 24-hour scale and day & night indication is also provided on the dial. Complete with its dual time indication and date feature by disc, this new Montblanc 1858 Geosphere watch is a perfect tool for those who like to frequently travel and explore. The black and white sfumato Glacier-patterned dial with white luminescent-coated rhodium-plated hands and indexes is a delightful combination. The globes with Greenwich meridians are also luminous in dark conditions, putting on a spectacular show of luminescence.
To finish, the new Montblanc 1858 Geosphere CARBO2 0 Oxygen watch is limited to 1969 pieces worldwide and comes fitted on a stylish black interchangeable textile strap that not only promises comfort against the wrist, but features a rope pattern and fastens with a double folding clasp and fine adjustment system.
