Milan Design Week AKA Solone del Mobile, is the world’s largest furniture and design fair in the world. It attracts design lovers from all over the globe by showcasing innovations and trends in furniture, lighting, textiles and decorative items. And who should have its own pop-up at Milano Rho Fiera during Milan Design Week? Italian watchmaker, Panerai, of course. Timed perfectly with this event, the manufacturer has unveiled a striking new timepiece from the Submersible collection that strengthens its ties with its maritime heritage and its pursuit of boundary-pushing performance. The Panerai Submersible Luna Rossa PAM01579.
Panerai and the America’s Cup
The new Panerai Submersible Luna Rossa PAM01579 celebrates several things. Firstly, it signifies the manufacturer’s nautical excellence and its relationship with the America’s Cup, which started all the way back in 2017. Since then, Panerai has become an Official Partner of the prestigious sailing competition, as well as the sponsor of the Softbank Team Japan and Oracle Team USA. More importantly, however, it became the Official Sponsor of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli two years later. It was at the 36th America’s Cup in 2021, however, that Panerai culminated its nautical ties with the sailing team. The special partnership with the sailing team represents the shared values of performance and precision between the two entities.
This year at Watches & Wonders 2024, Panerai also revealed the Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro Luna Rossa Ti-Ceramitech. Its case is manufactured from a proprietary material called Ti-Ceramitech - a titanium alloy that Panerai experts have subjected to a patented titanium “ceramization” process. It has taken a total of seven years to achieve the Ti-Ceramitech material used in the design of the new Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro Ti-Ceramitech Luna Rossa watch. The ceramization of the titanium used for this design achieves a distinct hue of blue while at the same time, transforming the titanium alloy surface into a ceramic layer that is dense and ready for its intended environment. This newer design, however, is crafted from stainless steel and evokes the Luna Rossa decal upon the surface of a grained and lacquered white dial.
Cementing Maritime History
For the past 6 years, Panerai has been celebrating its cherished partnership, releasing timekeeping instruments that either draw inspiration from the materials and technologies used in the sport, or the needs of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team itself. The CEO of Panerai, Jean-Marc Pontroue explains;
"Our association with the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team resonates deeply with Panerai’s maritime heritage and our pursuit of boundary-pushing performance. This partnership is a natural extension of our brand’s core values. The synergy with Panerai takes us on a shared journey in pushing the limits of performance, where precision, innovation and a relentless pursuit of excellence are at the heart of our endeavours”.
This second consecutive edition will mark the 37th America’s Cup where Panerai will get to show off its identity, Italian style and DNA, along with a deep-rooted connection to the marine world. The new Panerai Submersible Luna Rossa watch has been developed at the Maison’s Laboratorio di Idee at the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchatel and has been subjected to the toughest of conditions to ensure it will hold up in all environments when out at sea.
The Specifications of the New Panerai Submersible Luna Rossa PAM01579
The new Panerai Submersible Luna Rossa PAM01579 celebrates the watchmaker’s support for the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team and its participation in the 2024 America’s Cup. It stands as a beacon of resilience and endurance. If you like luxury timepieces that embody the spirit of racing, no sailing watch could be better for your collection. The model, crafted from brushed stainless steel, measures a diameter of 42mm. Its matching steel unidirectional rotating bezel has been filled in with a black ceramic that promises more wear resistance, corrosion resistance and scratch resistance than stainless steel. It can also withstand the shock and unintended impact likely to be encountered out at sea. Suffice it to say, the Submersible Luna Rossa watch from Panerai is ready to take on any challenge. Its 300-meter water resistance protects a movement inside that is capable of an impressive power reserve and a performance of 28,80 vibrations per hour. The Calibre P.900 is in-house manufactured movement that delivers an autonomy of 3 days of power reserve. This movement is also amongst some of the slimmest in the Panerai portfolio, measuring a mere depth of 4.2mm.
The dial of the new Panerai Submersible Luna Rossa watch is achieved through a series of meticulous processes. It must first be pressed to obtain a grain-like surface effect before layers of lacquer are then applied. The display is then paired with luminous hour markers and hands, luminous dots, a date window at 3 o’clock and a small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock. The small seconds hand is identified by a red-coated finish, which completes the colour scheme of the model inspired by the Luna Rossa training boat. Flip the watch over and you’ll see that the surface of the steel caseback has been engraved with a special image of the Slow Speed Torpedo AKA the notorious “pig” on which the Italian Navy sailed during their missions wearing the Panerai as a trusty tool.
To complete its look, the model is fitted on a bi-material rubber and grey textile strap, which features a red Luna Rossa stripe down the middle and secures with a stainless steel pin buckle.
