New Watches & Wonders 2024 Release - The Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 watch
Tuesday - 23 April 2024
The new Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 watch can uphold a water-resistant capability that matches the distance to the top of the Mont Blanc mountain.
Manufacturers seldom produce dive watches that reach water-resistant capabilities beyond 1000 meters. There are a handful of leading names in the industry that are capable of such a feat. The truth is, we rarely intend to sink to unthinkable depths of water with a watch strapped to our wrist unless we’re really serious about diving. Many luxury watch brands have dabbled in producing dive watches, however. Montblanc is one of them. And one incredibly stylish timepiece is the Iced Sea model – a collection of wristwatches that only surfaced in 2022.
The designs from the popular Iced Sea line are known for their robust cases, and their striking dials inspired by the glacial ice found at Mer de Glacé on the Mont Blanc massif. At this year’s Watches and Wonders 2024 showcase the other week, Montblanc unveiled two new 300-meter water-resistant models – one in bronze tones with a black glacier dial pattern and one stainless steel version with a burgundy dial. On top of that is a new lightweight titanium version that can venture down to a staggering depth of 4,180 meters. The latter takes directional cues from the Iced Sea collection and the brand’s innovative 0 Oxygen concept, which features cases that are completely devoid of O2.
One of the most eye-catching features of the new Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 watch is its glossy black aluminium insert on the bezel, which forms a contrasting frame around a deep ocean-blue inspired dial. Speaking of bezels, Montblanc has made some significant advancements in this area over the last year. The Montblanc Unveiled Timekeeper Minerva Chronograph released last year, for example, offers the functionality of a Monopusher, albeit integrated into the bezel. In previous designs to the 2023 release, these Montblanc Minerva Chronographs have featured a Monopusher, which goes through the same sequence of stop-start-reset for the stopwatch functions. With last year’s model, this sequence was carried over to the bezel, enabling the wearer to experience a whole new spin on the traditional chronograph. To utilise the function, you need to press gently down onto the bezel, rotating it clockwise. Each turn of the bezel carries out a different function, and rather than it swinging back to zero, it simply rotates to the new notch with every turn. But back to the new Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 watch…
Underwater Depths That Match Mont Blanc’s Height
Let’s discuss the key values of this watch. As with so many Montblanc watches, this professional dive tool tips its hat to the brand’s heritage and the glacier landscapes that surround the brand’s watchmaking facility. The company’s famous white star emblem was developed all the way back in 1913, representing a bird’s eye view of the Mont Blanc mountain, coated in a layer of crisp white snow, along with its six white glaciers. The height of that mountain is 4,810 meters – the exact same distance that this new diver’s tool can withstand underwater.
When the Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea watch launched as a diving companion, it broke away from the style of watch that enthusiasts were used to from the brand. Instead of the familiar mountaineering-themed sports watches, the Iced Sea watch, inspired by the Merc de Glace found on the slopes of the mountain, was robust, masculine and altogether new.
The New Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 Watch
Now, the new Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 is a bulky extension to what we already know but compensates for this with a lightweight titanium case. The 43mm model measures a depth of 19.4mm, giving it a muscular physique that is hefty to say the least. But the beauty of this watch is certainly in its boldness and its powerful aesthetic. The side of the case, where the fluted screw-down crown resides, marked with the iconic Montblanc emblem, is accompanied by a crown protection guard to help uphold its 4,810-meter water resistance. The case is also executed with a mix of polished bevels and lugs and a vertical satin-brushed finish.
The new Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 watch is fitted with a unidirectional rotating bezel that can only move in the counter-clockwise direction. This is a critical diving safety feature that has been employed across the entire spectrum of high-end dive watches, yet this one, filled with anodised aluminium material in black, frames the dial perfectly with its deeply knurled edge. Both the dot at 12 o’clock and the indices on the bezel have been treated in luminous material to aid legibility in the dark.
When you glance at the dial of the new Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 watch, you can appreciate the complexity of skill behind the design of its display. Its surface texture is achieved via an old Montblanc technique known as gratté boisé. It’s the same technique seen in the newly released Montblanc 1858 Geosphere CARB02 0 Oxygen watch. A piece of wood is used to scrape the surface of the dial, creating scratches that echo the look of a glacier surface, including the dark blue hues that are seen in the ice when it has been in the absence of oxygen.
The 0 Oxygen Concept
As with all 0 Oxygen watches from Montblanc, this new Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 watch is inspired by pioneering mountaineers and features a case devoid of oxygen. The design is an homage to those intrepid alpinists like Reinhold Messner who reached the highest peaks without supplementation oxygen. The oxygen-free case is achieved by a blue seal that sits in between the case and the sapphire crystal glass front. The removal of the oxygen eradicates the risk of the glass front fogging when the watch is exposed to extreme temperatures often experienced when climbing mountains or diving deep into the oceans. Without the risk of oxidation of the components inside the case, the watch is also sure to last longer.
To complete the stylish look of the new Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 watch, Montblanc experts have chosen to fit this watch on a black tapered rubber strap, which compliments the sfumato effect of the dial and its large Arabic numeral indexes. The strap can be adjusted over the top of a wetsuit, making it a particularly practical feature of the design. Additional features worth mentioning include its reliable automatic Calibre MB 29.29 engine, which produces a power reserve of 120 hours once fully wound. The watch and movement are also ISO-compliant and, by flipping the case over to its reverse side, reveals another special surprise. A wavy 3D blue pattern adorns the surface of the titanium caseback, reminiscent of the underwater universe. The surface has been subjected to laser-generated oxidisation, giving the metal a mix of matte and shiny surfaces.
