The new Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 watch has dropped a few sizes to flaunt the latest ice-blue look
The Tissot PRX collection hands down offers one of the best value-for-money sports watches on the market. It has a distinct retro design and comes in so many appealing colours and sizes that it’s hard to know which route to go down when extending your collection. The 35mm size, however, has been long awaited. The black, green, blue and white mother-of-pearl dials were covered here in an earlier article. Now comes the addition of an ice blue version, complete within a robust stainless steel package that is more manageable for those with smaller wrists. In addition to this, Tissot has also released an eye-catching 35mm model in an all-yellow gold PVD-coated version with a fully matching golden dial. The release of the new ice blue 35mm version of the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 watch demonstrates that the brand listens well to its audience, who have called for a smaller mechanical version of this popular sports watch for some time. (At the end of the day, many Tissot fans don’t have the wrist to carry off the PRX’s broad and sporty proportions and simply felt it was too big!)
About the Tissot PRX collection
The modern PRX watch collection by Tissot is an ode to the former PRX 40 205 from the 1970s. The “P” reference in the name stands for “precision”, while the “R” stands for “reliability”. The “X” stands for the Roman numeral for the number 10, which nods to the 10 bar water resistant rating of each watch in the series. Its barrel-shaped case is a reflection of the popular sports models released around the same time as the PRX 40 205, such as the Royal Oak by Audemars Piguet and the Patek Philippe Nautilus watch. It also features the integrated bracelet – another selling feature of the popular sports watch.
Some models from the Tissot PRX watch collection feature waffle-patterned dials with narrow hour markers and hands. Fitted with a quick-change system, it is clear to see how far Tissot has come in recreating a modern version of the 1970s collectable without losing any of its most desirable features. To round off the design, each model is fitted with a strong piece of scratch-resistant and anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass. You can also choose between a quartz-powered movement or the automatic Powermatic 80 engine, equipped with an impressive 80-hour power reserve and a Nivachron hairspring. The new Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 blue watch
It might sound great on paper but a 40mm Tissot PRX watch is not a simple “one size fits all” situation. For example, its lug-to-lug measurement is 44.5mm but including the first link, it actually measures 51.5mm. The 35mm version is smaller on all angles except the height – that remains unchanged. The width of the bracelet has also been downsized as has the 16mm width clasp. A brushed top surface and polished bezel are met with a sapphire glass front that protects the surface of the ice-blue dial, complete with a waffle-type surface pattern.
A useful date window dressed against a white date wheel features at 3 o’clock on the dial, whilst straight central hour and minute hands have been treated with Super-LumiNova to grant clear timekeeping in the dark. The hour markers around the hour track are finished in true PRX style – slim and refined, with a double marker at 12 o’clock. Discreet black dashes make up the minute track around the edge of the dial, framed by that distinct polished bezel.
Flipping the 35mm barrel-shaped stainless steel case over reveals the performance of the Powermatic 80 movement through a sapphire exhibition caseback. Its performance of 28,800 vibrations per hour guarantees an impressive 80 hours of power reserve once fully wound, making the watch incredibly weekend-proof. To complete its sporty profile, the new Ice Blue Tissot PRX 35mm Powermatic 80 watch secures to the wrist with an integrated stainless steel bracelet, executed in a brushed finish and anchored into position with a folding clasp engraved with the Tissot logo.
