NEW: Seiko Launches the Astron 5X GPS Solar Chronograph “Deep Night”, “Night Black” and “Silvery Night” Watches

Under the theme of “solidity” these new Astron timepieces look towards the future with a 1/20th of a second chronograph feature and a lightweight titanium structure

Are you a morning person or a night owl?  Sounds like a pretty irrelevant question to ask in relation to watch collecting, unless you’re wearing one of the two interpretations recently released by Seiko. In February, the Japanese brand launched two limited edition Seiko Astron GPS watches named the “Morning Star”. The designs evoked the arrival of the golden yellow orb in the sky as dawn breaks across the land. Black gives way to deep blue nuances before the golden light of the morning washes over the dial in vibrant, lustrous accents. The cases of these two models are made of shimmering black-coated titanium, which frames graduating dark blue displays adorned with a speckled, star-flecked pattern, representing the fading stars across the early morning sky. Light blue Lumibrite on the hands also made for a nice contrast against the rich golden-yellow dial elements, not to mention the various sub-dials and apertures that add a touch of technique to the designs.

If either of these two models took your fancy, you’d know that the smaller of the two is the 41.5mm ref SSJ021J1. It picks up GPS satellite and provides precision timekeeping via one of the Japanese brand’s GPS movements, automatically connecting twice a day. The movement deviates by +/- second per 100, 000 years. Staggering!

If it misses a satellite connection, it stores the last most accurate time, using that time until a link-up can happen again. Reporting the GPS receiving process is an aperture at 8 o’clock, as well as a charging status and leap second date. The second model is the larger 42.7mm Seiko Astron SSH145J1. It offers more features like a 6 o’clock dual time function, a day display at 3 o’clock and a Perpetual calendar with a 38-city time zone world timer feature. If you’re a Seiko Astron fan, you probably loved those models, but now the brand has released, something else that is equally as exciting.

Continuing with the Seiko Astron heritage, the recent launches by the brand continue to focus on the legacy of the solar-powered range. At the same time, they mark a first for the brand. They are the first to feature a chronograph with Dual Time technology.

The new Seiko Astron Solar GPS Solar Dual Time Chronograph SSH151J1

First up is the Seiko Astron 5X GPS Solar Chronograph “Night Black” SSH151J1, which features a new movement that connects twice a day to the GPS network, or manually with the push of a button. The advantage of the movement is that the main dial and sub-dial hands move simultaneously for better efficiency. The main dial and sub-dials of this new sporty model are executed in different contrasting shades, adding to a more dynamic and sportier design. This watch, like its counterparts, feature a two-part bezel with an upper part in ceramic and a frame in lightweight titanium. With a dual curved glass and titanium case - the watch offers a low centre of gravity and is ergonomically constructed for ultimate comfort on the wrist.

This model features a black dial with silver-filled chronograph counters at 6, 9 and 12 o’clock. The 6 o’clock counter features the 12-hour count-up function, while the 9 o’clock location is where you can find the perpetual calendar features. The 1/20th of a second chronograph function is located at 12 o’clock and all the counters boast red flecks of colour to add to the sporty vibes of the model.

The Seiko Astron Solar GPS Solar Dual Time Chronograph “Silvery Night” SSH153J1

The SSH153J1 reference is the opposite of the SSH151J1. It features a silver textured dial with black-filled chronograph dials. Similar to its counterpart, however, its perpetual calendar sub-dial at 9 o’clock colour matches the main dial. This model features a date window at 4 o’clock beside a leap year function. The minute scale around the periphery of the dial is finished in black. The push-pieces also curve effortlessly to keep in line with the profile of the case. The Dual Time function offers AM and PM indication, while the perpetual calendar is accurate to the year 2100 (as well as offering a DST adjustment function and a time transfer function). Like its counterparts, it also offers a signal reception result indication. You also have the added benefit of the watch’s 38 time zones world time fiction.

The Seiko Astron Solar GPS Solar Dual Time Chronograph “Deep Night” SSH155J1

The reference SSH155J1 sets itself apart from the others with its sleek black-coated titanium case as opposed to the unadorned titanium case versions. The super hard coating gives the timepiece a slick, modern finish on the wrist and comes equipped with the same power save function and accuracy guaranteed of +/- 15 seconds per month without a GPS signal. The two-part ceramic and titanium bezel is a striking feature, promising superior strength and scratch resistance. The watch features an all-black tone-on-tone dial too, adding to its stealthy aesthetic. At 43.4mm diameter, all three models offer the same proportions, including a case depth of 14.1mm. The easy-adjust three-fold clasp attached to the black-coated bracelet is the same as the two other models and is a handy feature. It can be removed via an easy push button release. All three watches are also water resistant to 100 meters and promise magnetic-resistant capabilities of up to 4,800A/m.

As a first for the brand in offering a wristwatch that combines Dual Time functionality with a chronograph, the new Seiko Astron GPS Dual Time Chronograph watches make for a great addition to round off any luxury watch collection. Thanks to the addition of this new Calibre 5X83, the watches offer a precise 1/20th of a second chronograph feature and boast the highest performance so far throughout the history of the Astron model. The ability to switch the time on the main dial to the 6 o’clock sub-dial by holding down the side buttons for three seconds is another handy feature. The time transfer is also made super quick thanks to the sub-dial hands and main hands working simultaneously with one another. With so many advantages to this new version of the Seiko Astron watch, it is clear the Japanese brand is focusing on wearer convenience and comfort above all else. It makes the three new releases an absolute steal for their price.
