Here’s the interesting back story on the inspiration behind the new Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Gran Premio de Cuba 1957 watch...
During the 1950s Havana, Cuba was a tourist hot spot and a go-to place for the rich and famous. Part of its growth as a luxurious location for the elite was down to a jewellery and luxury watch repair shop that had opened much earlier – back in 1882 to be more precise. The watch shop was founded by a Spanish immigrant named Don Ramon Cuervo who appointed his nephews to a role there. The business became Cuervo y Sobrinos – known for importing prestigious timepieces during the 1950s – around the same time that Havana was enjoying its heyday. Gary Cooper, Einstein and Hemingway are just a few famous names to have become associated with the luxury watch company. To raise Cuba’s profile further, the Cuban Grand Prix race was launched in 1957. Famous Argentinian pilot, Juan Manual Fangio won the first race in a Maserati 300S, just two years before he was kidnapped by anti-government revolutionaries following the political instability that the race brought with it. The racing event was short-lived, due to the political situation but returned one last time in the year 1960 when it was won by a British driver Stirling Moss who took first prize in his Maserati Tipo 61.
The new Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Gran Premio de Cuba 1957 Limited Edition watch
Paying homage to the Cuba Grand Prix during this era is the new Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Gran Premio de Cuba 1957 Limited Edition watch. Looking at the timepiece, it’s easy to see how the Maserati 300S became the inspiration behind the new limited edition timepiece. Its sculptural lugs and flamboyant case design are just two examples of features that the Historiador watch collection is known for. The watch is 42mm in diameter and is crafted from stainless steel, sitting at a height of 12mm. The 30-meter water-resistant watch is adorned with piston-style pushers that give the timepiece a distinctly retro feel whilst a double curved sapphire crystal glass compliments the style and shape of this chronograph watch.
The new Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Gran Premio de Cuba 1957 Limited Edition watch is exclusive to just 162 pieces worldwide and features Fangio’s red and yellow Maserati 300S colours upon its dial. The “Tropical” red tone is apparent across the whole of the display, along the small second counter at 9 o’clock, whilst the 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph timers are filled with a creamy colour to match the telemeter scale. The central hour and minute hands are leaf-shaped and filled with Super-LumiNova, as are the Arabic numerals around the hour track. The peripheral scale surrounding the telemeter is a tachymeter scale used for measuring speed against distance. Its blue, yellow and orange inscriptions perfectly frame the centre of the dial, whilst the Spanish ‘Taquimetro’ lettering is picked out in a bright white colour. The layered effect of the red dial adds depth to the design, making the Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Gran Premio de Cuba 1957 Limited Edition stand out as a unique-looking timepiece within the brand’s Historiador watch collection. A set of curved lugs add to the personality of this chronograph watch profoundly, leading to a matte black perforated leather strap with sporty red contrast stitching to enhance its racing character. Its red inner lining penetrates through the black perforated surface of the leather and encloses around the wrist with a stainless steel Cuervo y Sobrinos-engraved clasp.
