Hands-on with the Summer Colour Editions of the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf
Monday - 10 July 2023
Zodiac is launching three new summer-inspired Super Sea Wolf watches – all complete with a unidirectional rotating bezel, a tough ceramic case, and a sporty, colourful FKM rubber strap.
A brief look at the Importance of the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf
Among all Zodiac watches in the brand’s current catalogue, the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf has to be considered the jewel in the crown. It derives from the Sea Wolf watch that was first released by the brand back in 1953 – the same time as the Fifty Fathoms watch by Blancpain. Vintage dive watches from this generation are keenly sought-after on the pre-owned market today, oozing plenty of charisma and vintage charm. Early models had a bidirectional rotating bezel and a set of Arabic numerals that were easy to read underwater. Other than a difference in materials for its construction and its size, the modern-day Sea Wolf watch has altered very little. The functional design behind the Sea Wolf watch by Zodiac proved particularly popular for the military, thus it was used during the Vietnam War. During the 1970s, the Super Sea Wolf was introduced. With the same design language prevalent, it featured an updated case, primed for even more daring underwater depths and was soon adopted by the US Navy SEALs.
Zodiac put itself on the map for its innovative Sea Wolf design – arguably one of the first to offer a countdown-rotating dive bezel. Having seized this opportunity, the brand gave birth to an icon that, like other iconic watches, has changed very little over the years, keeping its devoted fan base happy with several iterations that continue to bring a touch of excitement to the wrist. The three new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf watches released by the brand for 2023 are equally as exciting. Let’s meet them…
The Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Ceramics Summer Colour Extension for 2023
Zodiac has been enjoying 140 years of innovation and as a mark of this journey, is releasing three new exciting colourways for summer, infused with the popular Super Sea Wolf DNA. The models are dynamic and eye-catching, having been crafted from a highly polished hardened ceramic material, offering a slightly larger case diameter of 41mm.
The new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Ceramic watches come in a white ceramic case, one with a light blue bezel ring (reference ZO9590), one with a fresh zingy orange ceramic ring (reference ZO9591) and the other with a darker orange ceramic ring (reference Z09592). The first model features a black dial with a cool blue-coloured central minute hand to echo the coloured 60-minute dive scale on the bezel. The second option is designed in the same way, with a vibrant light orange coloured minute hand against a silvery dial. The third model follows in the same path, with a darker orange minute hand, set against a mint green dial colour.
Each of the new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Ceramic watches features rectangular-shaped hour markers and a matching rectangular luminous pip on the central seconds hand. Both the central hands on the dial and the hour track markers have been filled with a generous amount of luminous material to assist with easy timekeeping, either during the night or whilst exploring deep underwater depths. The models offer a no-date design and feature the Zodiac name at the top of the display, along with the brand logo.
The new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Ceramic watches for 2023 have all been equipped with a water-resistant rating of 200 meters, making them perfect companions for water sports, days on the beach, or snorkelling, as well as swimming and diving activities. Geared for summer adventures, Zodiac chooses the super tough ceramic material for these watches thanks to its highly scratch-resistant and fade-resistant properties. Blended with a fusion of summer colour, the models harken back to retro models with their unusual colour palette, whilst remaining resolutely contemporary at the same time.
The creative director for Zodiac, Ryan White extends;“ We’ve always been attracted by the allure of ceramic. Not only for its resistance to wear and colour fading over time but the opportunities it allows us to explore creatively. These new colourway extensions for summer really embody the Zodiac spirit.”
Each watch sits at a depth on the wrist of 13.2mm and is fitted on a sporty and colourful FKM rubber strap in respective colours of light blue, orange and mint green. The bold and punchy colours of these rubber straps are a perfect match for each ceramic case, which has been manufactured from inorganic, non-metallic powders that are used in high-tech industries for their strength and high resistance. As a result, the ceramic cases of the Super Sea Wolf watches are also lightweight and hypoallergenic, holding a reliable automatic movement inside.
The Calibre STP 1-11 has been used throughout the Super Sea Wolf collection before and offers a power reserve of 44 hours. It is based on the Sellita SW200-1, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and promising an accuracy of 10 seconds per day.
