Hands-on with the EDOX Delfin The Original Chronograph 2023 Watches
Monday - 12 June 2023
The new Delfin The Original Chronograph watches to be released by Edox are offered in a range of exciting and eye-catching dial colours that add a unique spin to measuring elapsed times.
Aside from telling the time, a chronograph can add some pretty neat features to a wristwatch. It can stop, go, reset and start all over again, plus it tells the time and will often provide you with an additional date window to help you keep on top of a busy schedule at work. Edox is a great innovator of chronographs. In addition to its models with a three sub-dial layout, it offers bicompax designs as part of The Original Chronograph series. The counters are laid out at 3 and 9 o’clock and come in a variety of exciting colours, especially the new releases to have been unveiled by Edox for 2023. We’re going to look at these new models in this article but before we do, let’s touch on what makes a chronograph such a great daily companion for the wrist.
Why a chronograph?
You can think of a chronograph as a stopwatch for the wrist. It can be used to calculate your average speed or keep track of two events at the same time. It can also be used to measure things like heart rate and can often be seen with a tachymeter scale around the edge of the dial or on the bezel. The tachymeter scale is a great function that enables you to measure speed based on distance. There are also chronograph watches with telemeter functions that can inform you of the distance to an event that can either be heard or seen. Above all else, many believe that a chronograph offers you the best kind timekeeping experience on the wrist. With two key features combined into one (and sometimes many more), they are a technical innovation that has well and truly stood the test of time. Despite having a stopwatch built into a phone or other device, nothing beats the experience of activating the stopwatch functions of a chronograph via its two push-pieces situated at the side of the case. Brands like Edox are a great place to start exploring the chronograph watch. There are many options, which brings us to the new slew of Delfin The Original Chronograph watches released by the brand this year.
Amongst the new Delfin The Original Chronograph watches is the 43mm stainless steel model with a grey PVD coating and a stunning brown dial with black-filled chronograph counters. This sporty dial is surrounded by a black ceramic bezel with a rose gold-coloured trim – all completed on a black rubber band. Edox also offers the same model in a silver dial version with black chronograph counters and a vibrant orange ceramic bezel without the rose gold decoration. This model is also grey PVD coated and fitted on a black rubber strap. The deep green bezel version is another captivating chronograph design that shares the same silver and black dial as its siblings. It features a colour-coordinating set of central hands that match the finish of the bezel (rose gold, orange and green respectively for these models). The black rubber band is a nice touch against the coated steel case, giving these models a dynamic and almost futuristic styling. For something a little more classic, a black tone-on-tone chronograph dial is offered in a conventional stainless steel case with a black rubber band. This same dial option is also fitted on a stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp, making it perfect for pairing with sophisticated or professional attire too. Speaking of classic stainless steel bracelet options, you might want to take a look at the version with a deep blue dial and an unadorned steel case and bezel. It’s a timeless iteration that will look good whether wearing it for a run along the beach or a meeting in the office. The same model is also offered in a white rubber band, which transforms this Delfin watch into a contemporary design. Lastly, the rose gold PVD-coated stainless steel version of this 43mm chronograph is combined with a black dial and black rubber strap and features rose gold coloured hour markers and hands.
The new Delfin The Original Chronograph watches from Edox
Edox specialists have put some careful consideration into the design of the Delfin The Original Chronograph watch. Some of its key features include the famous Double O’ring, which was developed and patented by Edox in the 1970s. This technical standard increases the watch’s resistance to water pressure and is used for the pusher too. The Delfin The Original Chronograph watches are also integrated with 200-meter water resistance. It makes the chronograph suitable for swimming, snorkelling and plenty of water sports. To ensure that visibility is maintained during the night and when caught in dark conditions, the hour markers and the hands of the dial have been treated with plenty of Super-LumiNova. The material promises brightness in low-light conditions and is also non-radioactive and non-toxic.
All of the new Delfin The original Chronograph watches measure a 43mm diameter and have been crafted from stainless steel. Whilst the grey PVD-treated models exude an air of modernity and sportiness, the conventional stainless steel models are classic and slightly more understated despite a confident diameter. Each model is powered by a quartz movement (the Calibre 101) based on a Ronda movement. In each of the models, the date window is placed at 6 o’clock, set against a white background.
The new watches all feature a small second sub-counter at 3 o’clock, balanced by a 30-minute counter at 9 o’clock with a colourful central chronograph seconds hand and rectangular-shaped hour markers. Surrounding the dial is a tachymeter running around the eye of the dial, framed by a dodecagonal-shaped bezel with a useful 60-minute scale. The 200-meter water-resistant watches are all topped with a sapphire crystal glass front that protects the dial from damage caused by heat, moisture, light, scratching and dust.
Although all. of the new Delfin The Original Chronograph watches are incredibly eye-catching, our favourite probably has to be the brown dial iteration, purely due to the brand’s innovative use of colours and tones that mix beautifully with a unique selection of materials, bringing about a sports watch with a difference.
