Mondaine Sport 1 Watch Review
Thursday - 16 February 2012
Introduced for the second half of 2010, Mondaine’s put a slight twist on one of their best-known pieces. Two dials are now offered, and each is available in either black or white. Customers can opt for a more “modern” dial or a more “traditional” one.
The former features the SBB logo prominently, in several locations across the dial. After all, Mondaine got its start making watches for the railway industry, and thus it should come as no surprise that SBB (the abbreviation for the Swiss Federal Railway) is so heavily relied upon. Its inclusion points to Mondaine’s historical origins, while the red and white colour scheme serves to identify the watch as Swiss. But if that presentation doesn’t suit you, there’s always the old-school design: the sunray pattern with the centre of the dial serving as the hub. The rays widen as they radiate outward. One constant between these two faces is a dedicated date function located at the three o’clock position.
The piece itself sports a 41mm stainless steel case and a simple black leather strap with black stitching. These helps complete the clean and functional look that they’re trying to accomplish. But still, don’t let the apparent simplicity of the watch fool you into believing that it’s not tough enough. The Sport 1 is water resistant to ten atmospheres and come complete with a two-year warranty, along with coverage in Mondaine’s International Service Network. The Sport 1 is classy too: packed in a bright red Mondaine gift box.
