A masterpiece of watchmaking art

The Chopard Happy Sport watch first debuted in 1993. It drew its inspiration from the concept of the moving diamond first conceptualised by Karl Scheufele, with the help of the brand’s in-house designer Ronald Kurrowski. The rare design featured loose round brilliant-cut diamonds that were free to roam across the surface of a watch, free from their traditional prong settings. The design concept was considered futuristic back in 1976. In 1985, the first Chopard jewellery collection dedicated to this same concept was released, a whole 8 years before the iconic Happy Sport watch.

The Chopard Happy Sport watch was one of the first luxury watches to combine diamonds with steel. The sporty women’s dress watch soon became a bestseller and has since been made available in several different variations. Different case sizes of 30, 36 and 42mm are available, not to mention an oval watch case as opposed to the more classic rounded case. A cluster of freely moving diamonds floats atop the dial, whether that be a guilloche textured surface or a smooth time and date display. Whereas the original watches from 1976 could only feature moving diamonds around the edge of the dial, these models feature diamonds suspended between two pieces of sapphire crystal glass.

Its leather band in deep blue secures with a pin buckle fasten crafted from 18ct ethical rose gold. The case matches this material, spanning a 33mm diameter for the female wrist. The simple hours, minutes and seconds display is presented in silver with rose gold-coloured elements. They join a railroad minute track around the edge of the dial and sit underneath 5 free-spinning diamonds in rose gold settings. The bridges of the Calibre 09-01-C are completed in Cotes de Geneve decoration and put on display through a sapphire crystal glass exhibition caseback.

The Happy Sport watch meets an alluring twist with this Happy Sport Sun, Moon Stars model. The 33mm timepiece is crafted from ethical rose gold and recycled Lucent steel. Its deep blue dial sparkled with flecks of gold, is deeply entrancing. The diamond-set star and moon motifs travel across the surface of the dial, along with an ethical rose gold sun without interrupting the main timekeeping hands. This is thanks to being contained between two pieces of sapphire crystal, just as the classic round brilliant-cut diamonds behave. This stunning timepiece is a true talking point and measures a smaller diameter of 30mm for slenderer wrists. Chopard chooses to finish this timepiece on a deep blue alligator leather band.

Lastly, the more colourful option from the Happy Sport collection is also one of the most affordable. This 36mm wristwatch is crafted from Lucent steel and boasts the time via a playful pastel green colour. The watch is also powered by a quartz movement which brings the price of the timepiece down to a more budget-friendly option. A date at 4:30 and a set of sword-shaped hands sit under five majestic rolling diamonds. Creating a dressy look on the wrist, this model is completed on a Lucent steel link bracelet that secures with a refined folding clasp.
