Sinn U1 DS Limited Edition Watch Review
Thursday - 04 March 2021
Alongside their high-performing pilots instruments and chronographs, Sinn are illustrious for their dive watches and while many other luxury watch brands find contentment in their “desk-diving” watches, a term used to describe dive timepieces rarely used outside the home with water resistant ratings seldom surpassing 200 meters, Sinn are different. Their collections of diving watches are more than just “waterproof” but formidable tools designed for real, seasoned, professional divers. The Sinn U1 DS Limited Edition is yet another example of their technical prowess with a new decorative dial.
The Sinn U1 watch collection is home to some of the German watch manufacturer’s most impressive diving watches. They are labelled as “the diving watch made of German submarine steel” with incredible 1,000 metre water resistant cases, captive bezels and their legendary TEGIMENT technology protecting the exterior. The U1 series is home to a vast range of iterations, including the Sinn U1 B with a handsome ocean-blue dial, the U1 SDR and its black hard coated captive diver’s bezel and the fairly recent release, the Sinn U1 DE Limited Edition, which was designed in celebration of the 30th anniversary of German reunification. So, what’s different about the new Sinn U1 DS Limited Edition?
The most drastic embellishment of the Sinn U1 DS Limited Edition watch is its dial which has been uniquely decorated with an irregular, intricate pattern. The machine process involved with creating this effect cannot be repeated which means each 500-piece limited edition of the U1 DS is entirely unique. To fully appreciate the decorative pattern, it is worth seeing one of these models in person but believe us when we say the greyed-bronze tone and erratic “scratched” effect looks incredibly cool, especially when you tilt the dial at different angles and get various reflections and nuances of light. Regardless of its etched dial, the Sinn U1 DS Limited Edition is a diver’s watch and so legibility is made a requisite with a display of luminescent indexes and central hands and a luminescent marker on the bezel.
As with all Sinn U1 watches, the U1 DS is engineered from German Submarine Steel which is one of the only materials in the world that maintains a diver’s desired resistance to seawater and magnetic properties. The metal used to craft the 44m case is the very same steel used in the external hulls of the German Navy's new submarine class 212, which currently represents the most advanced non-nuclear submarines in the world. As well as being high-strength, seawater resistant and non-magnetic resistant, the case and captive bezel is further improved by the brand’s TEGIMENT technology which leaves the exterior especially resistant to knocks and scratches.
Dressed in a 60-minute scale, a necessary tool for measuring elapsed dive times, the captive bezel of the Sinn U1 DS Limited Edition has been carefully designed so that it does not detach under harsh impacts. Instead, the bezel is attached to the central part of the case and alongside the screw down case back, screw in crown and sapphire crystal glass assists in the model’s ridiculously impressive 1,000 metre water resistance rating. Its water resistance has been certified by the DNV GL and its temperature resistance and functionality in accordance with the European diving equipment standards.
To power the central hands for hours, minutes and seconds and date window at 3 o’clock, the Sinn U1 DS Limited Edition encapsulates the SW 200-1 automatic winding movement. The Swiss made calibre also delivers 26 bearing jewels, frequency of 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour, a power reserve of 38 hours and is certified as anti-magnetic as per DIN 8309 standards.
The Sinn U1 DS Limited Edition watch is currently available on three strap options: a black silicon strap, alligator leather strap and a solid expandable stainless steel bracelet with folding buckle.
