Oris 57th Reno Air Races Limited Edition Watch Review

The 2020 Reno Air Races may have been cancelled but Oris continues to support the event with a stunning new 1,000 piece Oris 57th Reno Air Races Limited Edition watch. Marking the brand’s third year as Official Timepiece Sponsor of the Reno Air Races, 2020 has been a difficult one, but the Swiss watch manufacturer show no signs of slowing down becoming one of the most prolific watch brands of the year, with the Oris 57th Reno Air Races Limited Edition another fine example of their prowess.

The Oris 57th Reno Air Races Limited Edition watch finds itself once again part of the Big Crown family. In 2018, the 55th annual Reno Air Races was celebrated by a Big Crown ProPilot Day Date while 2019 saw a Big Crown ProPilot with GMT, small seconds and date.  The Big Crown collection is inspired entirely by the world of aviation and the brave men who tackle our skies and since the Reno Air Races consists of exactly that, it has become the perfect choice for celebrating the event.

Providing a sophisticated yet subtly stealthy aesthetic, the case of the Oris 57th Reno Air Races Limited Edition watch is handsomely engineered from grey PVD plated stainless steel and measures to 41mm in size. This is a little smaller than the above-mentioned models, but characteristic of the Big Crown collection, it showcases its hallmarked oversized crown and fixed coin-edged bezel inspired by jet engine turbines. Assisting in its 100 metre water resistance, the limited edition of 1,000 pieces is equipped with a grey PVD plated screwed down case back wonderfully decorated with the words “RENO 57TH AIR RACES”, the limited edition number and a special Air Reno Races-inspired image.

The centrepiece to the Oris 57th Reno Air Races Limited Edition is quite noticeably its dial. It’s white, blue and black aesthetic looks stunning up close and provides exceptional readability, something absolutely essential for pilots. There are handsome touches of blue found on the tip of the central seconds hand, on the GMT inscription inside the pointer date ring and on the tip of the GMT hand which has been carefully designed to look like a plane. The Arabic numerals and large propeller-shaped hands are also decorated in grade A Superluminova for optimal legibility at night. For an additional touch of protection, the dial is housed beneath scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass, domed on both sides and treated with an anti-reflective coating on the inside.

Powering the Oris 57th Reno Air Races watch is the Oris 798 automatic winding calibre based on the Sellita SW330-1. It runs at a frequency of 28,800vph, provides a power reserve of 42 hours and is equipped with a total of 25 jewels. Most importantly, the Swiss made movement provides an exceptional choice of functionality on the dial. Besides the classic central hands for hours, minutes and seconds, we have a useful GMT function relayed on the perimeter of the dial detailed by a useful 24-hour scale. At its centre, the dial also conveys a pointer date complication with a small triangular date indicator.

Retailing at £2,300, the Oris 57th Reno Air Races Limited Edition is available to order today on the Jura Watches website with interest free finance and free delivery available.
