New Seiko Prospex Black Series Night Vision Watches Have Arrived
Sunday - 21 January 2024
A trio of new black watches has joined the Seiko Prospex Black Series Night Vision collection, boasting yet another high-impact design and driven by an in-house movement.
Seiko’s Black Series Night Vision watches are inspired by diving missions at night. The silence of the water at night. The deep and intimidating depths of the ocean by which many night-based divers have only a small light source to use as their guidance. In 2022, I covered three Seiko Prospex Black Series watches with similar designs to these new releases. Each was inspired by key dive watches released by the Japanese watchmaker in 1965, 1968 and 1970. The Seiko Prospex SPB253J1, the Seiko Prospex SPB255J1, and the Seiko Prospex SPB257J1 all feature a stealthy black and orange aesthetic that evokes the mystery and daring nature of nighttime diving.
In that same vein, the new Seiko Prospex Black Series Night Vision watches released this year are rugged in design and are powered by reliable in-house manufactured movements. Evoking the intrepid diver’s view of the underwater world through a night scope, each model is slightly different to the other, offering its own features relevant to their sub-category; the Turtle, the Sumo and the Speedtimer.
Although different to one another in some ways, the three new Seiko Prospex Black Series Night Vision watches for 2024 do share some qualities also. Each model exhibits luminescent materials on its hands and hour markers for improved legibility in the dark whilst underwater. The new watches also feature sapphire crystal glass fronts and ceramic bezels that promise scratch-proof qualities. In addition to these features, the three new Prospex watches by Seiko have been rigorously tested to ensure that they meet the standards expected of any watch exposed to such extreme environments.
Sports lovers and outdoor-goers alike are sure to fall in love with the design of each of these three new Seiko Prospex Black Series watches. Here are some of the details you’ll want to know before deciding which model suits you best.
The Seiko Prospex Black Series ‘Night Vision’ Solar Speedtimer Chronograph SSC923P1
In a first for Seiko, these new Night Vision watches are the first to feature LumiBrite Pro in green on their dials. The colour is not only easy to see in the dark but gives these new Prospex watches a whole new aesthetic. The LumiBrite Pro material has a higher-intensity glow that is both brighter and longer lasting.
The sapphire crystal glass mentioned earlier does a superb job of protecting the surface of a grey dial with square and rectangular-shaped hour markers and tapering central hour and minute hands. The chronograph counters of this Speedtimer model are filled with black, offering a 24-hour scale, a 60-minute counter, and a small seconds sub-scale.
Adding to its functional qualities, the Seiko Prospex Black Series ‘Night Vision’ Solar Speedtimer Chronograph features a date function at 4 o’clock and a black tachymeter bezel for measuring speed based on distance. The solar-powered V192 Calibre is a superb choice of engine for this sporty design, offering six months of battery once charged by any light source. The watch is completed on a black nylon strap with white top stitching.
The Seiko Prospex Black Series ‘Night Vision’ Turtle Diver SRPK43K1
Next up is the Seiko Prospex Black Series ‘Night Vision’ Turtle Diver which exhibits a similar grey-coloured dial surface and the same green LumiBrite Pro material on its indexes and hands. This design, based on the dive watch, features chunky hands and bold circular and trapezoid-shaped hour markers. You also get a useful day-date feature nestled underneath a cyclops lens at 3 o’clock. A scratch-proof ceramic dive bezel in black enables you to effectively measure elapsed time underwater, while the Prospex “Turtle” aesthetic is preserved via a softy curving case, evoking the shell of a turtle.
A black stainless steel bracelet ensures a stealthy aesthetic is maintained in this Prospex Black Series watch. Inside a 200-meter water-resistant case is the Calibre 4R36. The reliable movement provides you with a 40-hour power reserve during times when the watch is taken off the wrist. This Black Series Night Vision Turtle Diver watch from the Prospex series is perfect for deep-sea divers and land-based explorers alike.
Seiko Prospex Black Series ‘Night Vision’ Sumo Diver Limited Edition SPB433J1
The third model belonging to the new Black Series watch collection is a limited edition of 3,500 pieces. The Seiko Prospex Black Series ‘Night Vision’ Sumo Diver Limited Edition evokes a strong and bold muscular aesthetic, which I like. Enhanced by a stealthy black coating, it gives off the right vibes for extreme adventuring, rock climbing, and underwater caving. Its grey dial with LumiBrite Pro-coated hands and indexes in green look stunning against a black steel bracelet. Luminescent markers also feature on the unidirectional rotating bezel of this dive watch, enabling you to easily track the 60-minute scale whilst underwater.
The Sumo Diver version also features a simple date window at 3 o’clock, a luminous tip at the end of its second hand, and a 4 o’clock crown. The automatic 6R35 movement sitting at the heart of this watch promises a power reserve of 70 hours and sits inside a broad 45mm case that is sure to communicate confidence and masculinity once on the wrist.
In comparison with the Black Series watches of 2022 with their black and orange colourways, the new Black Series Night Vision watches are just as sporty and offer all the key features expected of those watches from the collectable Prospex series.
