Meet the Sinn 103 Classic 12 Limited Edition
Friday - 08 October 2021
The new Sinn 103 Classic 12 Limited Edition watch features a traditional tri-compax chronograph layout surrounded by an all-new black ceramic bezel with a 12-hour scale for travel. The watch is limited to 600 pieces worldwide and celebrates the German watchmaker’s 60th anniversary
If you weren’t already aware of the Sinn 103 – one’s of the German watchmaker’s most iconic watch designs to date – you must have been living under a rock. The watch series is feature-packed with innovative technology that assists a pilot with all he needs whilst navigating the skies. It’s also instrument-inspired, echoing the look of cockpit dials. But if you don’t take to the skies frequently, the Sinn 103 also makes for a pretty stylish timepiece for those with feet firmly on the ground. To grow the collection further, Sinn SpezialUhren, who has been around for six decades, launches the Sinn 103 Classic 12 watch– the number 12 of which relates to the second time zone feature on its bezel.
What’s new?
Familiarly, the chronograph counters seen frequently on the traditional pilot chronograph Sinn 103 watches feature counters placed in the 6-9-12 layout. But the new Sinn 103 Classic 12 Limited Edition watch changes things up a bit. This dial is sure to appeal to those fans of Sinn’s earlier chronograph models from the 1960s with a 3-6-9 tri-compax layout that brings back a bit of vintage flavour. Over the years, the collection has become a fertile ground for several limited-edition versions, as well as the basic acrylic crystal models that are just about as unfussy as they get - but the Sinn 103 Classic 12 watch follows on in the same footsteps, with a no-frills chronograph design built from Sinn’s innovative choice in materials. The bezel benefits from a new black ceramic – a first for the watches within the Sinn 103 series.
The new Sinn 103 Classic 12 watch
The new Sinn 103 Classic 12 watch is a limited edition timepiece to mark the brand’s 60th anniversary. The dial of the pilot’s chronograph obeys the rules of the Sinn 103 formula, but there has been a significant material change in the bezel. The reverse panda dial is achieved by a black electroplated surface and features the rudimentary characteristics, with syringe hands that have been treated with Super-LumiNova materials. The sub-registers at 3, 6, and 9 have been rendered in an off-white hue. This shade takes the name of “chamois” in the Sinn world and pairs well with the luminous-treated applied hour markers. The sub-counters are surrounded by metal rims, offering a 30-minute function at 3 o’clock, a 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock, and a small second sub-scale at 9 o’clock.
The new Sinn 103 Classic 12 Limited Edition watch is exclusive to just 600 pieces worldwide and features a 41mm case crafted from polished stainless steel. The captive bezel has a ceramic insert that features the 12-hour scale in the same “chamois” colour for tracking a second time zone as well as the main central time. As mentioned, the material marks a first for the Sinn 103 watch. Traditionally the bezels in this series are crafted from aluminium. At first glance, however, the profile of the bezel remains unchanged with a slim shape and plenty of vintage charm. Ceramic, of course, has become standard for high-end watches in recent years and is chosen for its high scratch resistant properties. As a result, the bezel of this new limited edition Sinn 103 Classic 12 watch will age differently from those incorporating the black aluminium bezels.
Geared for travellers, frequent globe trotters or those who just love the added functionality of a watch with an additional time zone feature, the Sinn 103 Classic 12 is easy to operate for on-the-go individuals. The top of the case features a domed sapphire crystal glass front that protects the surface of the dial. Threaded pushers are screwed into the case at 2 and 4 o’clock and the watch features a screw-in caseback, as well as a screw-down crown to uphold the model’s 200-meter water resistance.
Sinn’s Ar-Dehumidifying Technology
As part of Sinn’s Ar-Dehumidifying Technology, (which enhances functional reliability and freedom from fogging) the lower left lug reveals the indicator for the titanium drying capsule inside the watch, showing when it needs to be replaced. This prevents the ageing effect of the oil inside the watch’s mechanism. A protective gas, as well as special seals, slow down this process whilst also preventing the crystal glass from fogging either on the front or back of the watch case. This can often be a problem when a watch has experienced an extreme change in temperature. To assist with this process, the drying capsule is filled with copper sulphate that absorbs the moisture from the air inside the watch. The indicator changes from pale to dark blue to signify a fully saturated capsule.
The beating heart
The new Sinn 103 Classic 12 Limited Edition watch is fitted with the Calibre SW 510, which is a Sellita based movement and identical to the SW 500, despite having a classic 3-6-9 dial layout in this version. It ticks at 28,800 beats per hour and provides a 48-hour power reserve, with a hacking seconds function and a quick-set date. Through the back of the case and via a sapphire crystal glass exhibition feature, Cotes de Geneve decoration can be admired, along with the Sinn logo.
To finish its vintage cockpit instrument-inspired (yet classic pilot chronograph) look – the Sinn 103 Classic 12 watch is fitted with a dark green wild boar strap but also comes with an additional black cowhide leather strap with an alligator grain for a more classic look.
