Meet the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Annual Calendar Watches
Friday - 15 October 2021
The new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF watch series is a tasteful synthesis of the brand’s integrated stainless steel sports watch and its earlier Toric models that have, in the past, been described as Breguet-influenced. Guido Terreni has recently become the brand’s CEO and no doubt his experience of Bvlgari’s Octo Finissimo watch has influenced this new line, which is described as a fresh take on the already-popular Tonda watch.
There are two new annual calendar watches belonging to the Tonda PF series – a stainless steel model and an 18ct rose gold model. Emblazoned with the new PF reference at the top of the dial, these models are hard to miss and have entered the collection alongside an accompanying time and date watch with a micro-rotor, a chronograph, and a split-second chronograph crafted from platinum.
The new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF collection was unveiled at Geneva Watch Days event last month and was described by Terrini as “a watch of purity”. At the root of virtually every wristwatch designed by Michel Parmigiani, the concept behind these models is driven by the Fibonacci sequence. This is a mathematical formula associated with the golden ratio and determines the meticulous measurements of each hand, the exquisitely applied guilloche textured pattern on the surface of a dial, the curvature of the lugs, the size of the counters, and so on. These principles have come to define a Parmigiani Fleurier watch. Let’s take a look at these two new additions in a little more detail. Here’s the stainless steel and the 18ct rose gold versions of the annual calendar watches belonging to the new Tonda PF collection by Parmigiani Fleurier.
That new logo
It would be sinful not to firstly point out the differences between the Tonda PF models and those watches belonging to the Tonda collection itself. Appearing at the 12 o’clock location on the dials of the new Tonda PF watches is a new oval, double-edged “PF” applique that is vertically set against a grey-coloured grain d’orge guilloché dial. Interestingly, the motif is surrounded by an hour track that is set upon the point at which two levels on the dial meet. It angles the baton hour markers in an unusual three-dimensional stance. The outer edge of the dial is framed by a hand-knurled bezel crafted from 950 platinum and 18ct rose gold on the steel and rose gold iterations respectively.
These Parmigiani Fleurier annual calendar watches present information in three sub-registers laid out in the 3-6-9 format. The counter at 3 o’clock provides the months of the year and the 9 o’clock counter offers the days of the week. These scales are balanced by a 122-year moonphase, visible in both hemispheres at 6 o’clock. The moon phase details are decorated in luxurious deep blue and golden tones. There’s also a retrograde date display that is easy to access around the periphery of the dial. The delta-shaped hands on the dial, which provide the minutes and hours, have been skeletonised for added detail against the textured surface of the display.
The case and movement
The new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Annual Calendar watches both measure a diameter of 42mm and have a built-in water resistance of 100 meters. The depth of the case sits at 11.1mm on the wrist and the top of the case is equipped with a piece of ARunic anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass. This protects the detailing of the grain d’orge guilloche dial surface, shielding it from scratching, denting, moisture, heat and light damage. It is through the sapphire crystal exhibition feature on the back of the case, however, where the sheer beauty of the watch’s movement can be admired. The meticulous decoration and attention to detail are evident throughout the entire mechanism. 18ct gold finishes are seen in the rotor of the Caliber PF339 with an engraved PF logo adorned to its surface. The self-winding movement comprises 32 jewels and beats at a rhythm of 28,800 vibrations per hour, retaining enough energy to provide a 50-hour power reserve when away from the wrist. The Calibre PF339 is based on the design of Parmigiani Fleurier’s PG331 Calibre and can offer this power reserve thanks to a series-mounted double barrel. Even down to the smallest details, including those components that are hidden, the handcrafted finishes like the bridges, which are hand-bevelled and decorated with Côtes de Genève, are present.
Whether it’s the rose gold elements on the dial of the 18ct rose gold Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Annual Calendar watch that catches your eye or the more classic tones of the steel version – both watches share a sense of equilibrium across the dial and are each fitted on a matching 18ct rose gold or stainless steel integrated bracelet to match the materials of their respective cases.
