Meet the Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba Syroco Special Edition Watch
Tuesday - 24 January 2023
Tipping its hat to French start-up company Syroco and its latest venture to produce a sailing vessel that will break the sailing speed record, the Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba Auto Syroco Special Edition watch is clad in maritime blue colours and features a new rubber band embossed with the Khaki print in bold.
Cast your minds back to last year when Hamilton released an updated version of the Khaki Scuba Auto watch. It was an even better value proposition than before with some vast improvements made to its architecture. Take, for example, its case growth from 40mm to 43mm. It made way for more space on the dial, enhanced all the more by the removal of the date window between 4 and 5 o’clock. Last year’s addition to the collection also featured a unidirectional rotating bezel made from ceramic instead of aluminium. In fact, the 2021 release of the Hamilton Khaki Scuba watch came in two really attractive variants. One was a classic black dial whilst the other was blue. Both had a matte finish upon their dials yet the blue version also boasted a gradient finish, with darkened edging to the dial that appeared almost black. This year, Hamilton adds to the Khaki Scuba Auto sub-collection with another version. Meet the new Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba Syroco watch.
The new Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba Syroco watch is a collaborative effort between the luxury watch brand and the start-up company and was designed in honour of Syroco's wind-powered speedcraft. The scientific and technical laboratory takes its name from the ferocious Sahara desert’s sorroco winds. Behind the company is a world champion and pro athlete as well as a team of start-up specialists and entrepreneurs including a racing boat designer and a naval architect. In the current climate, many transport and energy sectors are looking to meet economic challenges and Syroco supports and assists them in doing so. Now, the Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba Auto Syroco watch looks like a bonafide water sports watch, yet the Syroco speedboat looks nothing like a sailing vessel. It looks more like a plane, with its wings clipped. Elevated above the water’s surface via a pole, the sailboat will hang off a kite showing a radically different way of travelling across the water.
The new Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba Auto Syroco Special Edition watch is inspired by the speedcraft that was created to break the sailing speed record whilst simultaneously setting benchmarks for carbon-free maritime transportation. It features a blue dial exhibiting a reference to Syroco’s target speed of 150m/h. To stand out from these deep blue maritime-inspired dial shades, the minute track and second hand are executed in an eye-catching vivid orange. A mix of triangular-shaped indexes and batons creates the hour track, coated in Super-LumiNova to match the treatment applied to the central hour and minute hands. A touch of luminous material is also applied to the tip of the second hand.
A blue and silver dive bezel frames the entire dial of this special edition Hamilton Khaki watch with a legible 60-minute scale applied to its surface for intuitive timekeeping whilst underwater. By simply aligning the bezel with the minute hand, the diver can track his remaining dive time or his remaining oxygen time, enabling him to make appropriate stops according to his underwater pursuits. Topping the dial and protecting its surface from scratching, denting, light, moisture and dust damage, the front of the new Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba Auto Syroco watch is sealed with a pane of scratch-resistant and anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass.
Inside the new-for-2022 Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba Syroco watch is the H-10 movement. This automatic beating heart, known as the Powermatic, is based on the ETA C07.611 and performs to the rhythm of 21,600 vibrations per hour. Once fully wound, the movement comprising a total of 25 jewels provides a total power reserve of 80 hours. The case protecting the movement measures a 40mm diameter and sits at a height of 12.95mm on the wrist, providing a 100-meter water-resistant housing around it. A special edition blue rubber strap bears the embossed Khaki print across its surface, securing with a stainless steel fastening engraved with the Hamilton logo.
Just like Hamilton, Syroco is getting its head down, trying to make a difference to show what is possible. The vessel aiming to break the sailing speed record whilst reducing carbon emissions will carry the Hamilton name on its flanks whilst the new Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba Syroco watch gives water sport watch enthusiasts something cool, vibrant and innovative to play about with.
